			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Osteoporosis is a very serious disease of your bones that can lead to breakdown of the bone density, causing it to be weak enough that it is susceptible to breakage.  People sometimes do not believe osteoporosis to be serious, since it is a gradual disease with a gradual onset of symptoms. In other words, nobody that gets osteoporosis is metaphorically hit over the head with a crux of issues all at once.  Unlike cancer or another serious illness, there is no immediate life-threatening problem when one develops osteoporosis.  However, being diagnosed with osteoporosis can truly remove the quality of a person’s life. Luckily, there are precautions that can be taken to prevent the development of this disease which generally affects the elderly. It is very important to take measures early in life so as to avoid this progressive disease later on. </p>
<p>Exercise is a great way to fight osteoporosis early in life.  Believe it or not, exercise is critical for the prevention of weak bones and, besides its other positives, this is just another reason why exercise should be a daily part of your routine.  Any weight-bearing exercise is particularly good for osteoporosis, such as weight training, running, or other high-impact sports and activities.  While you have probably heard that running is hard on the knees or hips, in reality your bones are getting stronger the longer one continues this type of activity.  The striking and impact of your foot on the pavement or hard ground actually works to harden the bones to breakage over time. </p>
<p>Weight training is another very popular exercise that is good in preventing osteoporosis.  Weight training has become increasingly more popular over the years, and gym memberships have risen drastically as men, women and children alike can now be found lifting weights for good health.  Weight training also helps to increase bone density, as well as improve your posture, improve your mood, and many report an improvement in self-confidence. </p>
<p>Other than exercise, you can help prevent osteoporosis with certain supplements.  Some of the most common supplements for the prevention of osteoporosis are calcium and vitamin D.  Most people are aware that calcium is important for strong bones and teeth.  They hear it on commercials and their parents tell them from the time they are little to drink their milk. However, most people probably do not take it as seriously as they should.  It really is a good idea to supplement with calcium every day to help prevent osteoporosis down the road.  Calcium supports bone density and bone healing. </p>
<p>While it is true that milk and other dairy products are a good source of calcium, you may not be getting all the calcium you need from these sources.  If you are a vegetarian or vegan especially, who does not consume any dairy products, it is especially important for you to take a calcium supplement.  Broccoli and fortified orange juice contain good amounts of calcium, but you probably cannot stomach enough broccoli to make it worthwhile. </p>
<p>Vitamin D occurs naturally with sunshine, so getting your exercise outdoors can help provide you with the vitamin D you need.  Remember to wear your sunscreen, of course. While outside activity in the sun can be a wonderful and fun source of Vitamin D, you will likely not get enough of it without supplementation.  Some areas of the country are sunnier than others, and then there are the winter months to consider when people tend to stay indoors more often.  With the amount of Vitamin D supplements available, it can easily be incorporated into your daily routine. </p>
<p>In keeping up with your protein consumption, and also increasing your Vitamin C and Vitamin K intake, you can also help keep your bones stronger and prevent osteoporosis.  Again, you can do this by supplementing if you are uncertain as to whether your diet provides sufficient amounts of these important vitamins. </p>
<p>A supplement called glucosamine chondroitin, which is actually two supplements generally sold in a compound as one, is very helpful with joint pain associated with age and increased activity level.  While not directly helpful for the prevention of osteoporosis, it is used to treat osteoarthritis.  You may want to consider adding this supplement to help prevent the aches and pains that sometimes occur in your bones as you age and try to maintain the same level of activity and fitness. </p>
<p>Supplementing with these vitamins, minerals, and aminos can be very beneficial when used in combination with a healthy lifestyle and diet.  Make sure to keep your alcohol consumption in moderation for healthy bones as well as cut out any smoking habit you may have, since smoking and heavy drinking both increase the risk of osteoporosis.  Follow these simple rules and you will increase your chances of having strong, healthy bones for life. </p>

Cholesterol plays a central role in many biochemical processes, but is best known for the association of cardiovascular disease with high levels of<br />
cholesterol in the blood.<br />
Konrad Bloch and Feodor Lynen shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1964 for their discoveries concerning the mechanism and regulation of the cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism.<br />
Cholesterol is a sterol (a combination steroid and alcohol) and a lipid found in the cell membranes of all body tissues.  It is transported in the blood plasma of all animals.  The average amount of blood cholesterol varies with age, typically rising gradually until one is about 60 years old.<br />
In recent years, the somewhat imprecise term &#8220;bad cholesterol&#8221; has been used to refer to LDL (low density lipoprotein) which, according to the lipid hypothesis, is thought to have harmful actions, and &#8220;good cholesterol&#8221; to refer to HDL (high-density lipoprotein), thought to have beneficial actions.<br />
The American Heart Association provides a set of guidelines for total blood cholesterol levels and risk for heart disease.  The desirable LDL level is considered to be less than 100 mg/dl.  However the 1987 report of National Cholesterol Education Program suggest the total blood cholesterol level should be less than 200 mg/dl normal blood cholesterol, if the cholesterol level is between 200 and 239 mg/dl it is considered borderline-high, and higher than 240 mg/dl is considered high cholesterol level.<br />
Conditions with elevated concentrations of oxidized LDL particles are associated with fatty deposits forming on the walls of arteries, a condition known as Arteriosclerosis, which is considered the principal cause of coronary heart disease and other forms of cardiovascular disease.<br />
In contrast, however, if LDL particle number is low and a large percentage of the HDL particles are high, then fatty deposits forming on the walls of the arteries are usually low, and can even be negative, for any given total cholesterol concentration.<br />
Cholesterol is found in animal fats: all food containing animal fats contains cholesterol.  Plants have trace amounts of cholesterol, so even a Vegan diet, which includes no animal foods, has traces of cholesterol.<br />
Cholesterol is not necessarily dietary in origin, it can be turned into cholesterol by the liver from unburned food metabolites.  The liver converts unburned food metabolites into very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and secretes them into plasma where they are converted to low-density lipoprotein LDL) particles and fatty acids, which can affect other body cells.  There appear to be seasonal variations in cholesterol levels in humans because of the unburned food metabolites the amount of cholesterol is higher in winter.<br />
Cholesterol is required to build and maintain cell membranes; it regulates membrane fluidity over a wider range of temperatures.  Cholesterol also aids in the manufacture of bile (which stored in the gallbladder and helps digest fats), and is also important for the metabolism of fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E and K.<br />
Cardiologists suggest that the public need to change its diet.  To reduce cholesterol levels by lowering saturated animal fats and increasing polyunsaturated fats.  Lowering cholesterol is a good start but it is far from all that is needed.<br />
Common Vitamins and over the counter products can help with High Cholesterol such as Vitamin C,  Lecithin, Pectin, Garlic, EPA, Niacin and Phytosterols.<br />
Vitamin C has been shown to combat the development of cholesterol deposits in the arteries.  Within a few hours after receiving vitamin C patients showed a sharp decline in the cholesterol levels of the blood.<br />
Lecithin has the potential to protect against fat clogged arteries when take daily.<br />
Pectin limits the amount of cholesterol the body can absorb.  High pectin count in apples may be why &#8220;One a day keeps the doctor away&#8221;.<br />
Garlic counteract the usual result of high fats in the diet and to help reduce high blood pressure.<br />
Studies of the Greenland Eskimos lack of heart attacks have show that Eico-Sapentaenoic Acid (EPA) lowers blood cholesterol considerably, even more than polyunsaturated fat does.  It also triggers a major drop in triglycerides.  Salmon Oil is one of the best known sources of natural EPA.<br />
Niacin is the closest thing available to a perfect treatment that corrects most causes of coronary heart disease.  Niacin blocks the release of fatty acids from fat cells.  Niacin plays a critical role in energy production, gene expression, and hormone synthesis.  You cannot live without it.  Niacin also tends to shift LDL particle distribution to larger particle size and improve HDL functioning.  The intake of 3 grams Niacin for as little as two weeks can reduce serum cholesterol by 26 percent.<br />
Phytosterols is found in flax seed and peanuts, which are suggested to help lower serum cholesterol.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Even if your reasons for turning toward a vegetarian lifestyle are moral, ethical or religious, it is common to miss the taste of meat especially when you first start your walk as a vegetarian.  The first rule to enforce is not to feel guilty about that.  Just loving meat doesn&#8217;t make you a bad thing.  After all, most of us are raised eating pork, chicken, beef and other meats and if our parents did not have scruples about meat consumption, you have that as part of your upbringing.<br />
The good news is there are lots of substitutes for meat and wonderful recipes you can use so you can eliminate meat from your diet and not feel like you are &#8220;going without&#8221;.  The added benefit is that vegetarian eating is much healthier for your body than a diet where meat is a common ingredient.  Meat carries such a higher incidence of calories and fats that are harder for your body to digest and assimilate that you are doing your body a big favor switching to a meatless lifestyle.<br />
One way to still enjoy some of the aspects of meat but eliminate the actual animal part is to go with meat substitutes in traditional meat meals.  Many restaurants serve veggie burgers where you get the good taste and familiar meal that we all like about hamburgers but you are still staying totally vegetarian.  By shopping at markets and groceries that are supportive of the vegetarian lifestyle, you can often find other traditional meat meals prepared entirely without actual meat to help you get past missing that source of protein.<br />
A staple of vegetarian diet planning is Tofu.  Tofu is made from Soya beans so it is totally natural and a good fit to your vegetarian meal planning.  But it is full of proteins and it is a very flexible ingredient for vegetarian recipes because it reflects the flavors of other foods and herbs and it works well in dishes that use sauces so it can almost be mistaken for a meat dish.<br />
As you set about building your library of vegetarian recipes that are designed to take meat out of the equation, you will often find Tofu as one of the ingredients.  That is because it works so well in lots of different recipes and responds well to grilling, baking or any other preparation method.  Just be sure you take the time to dry your Tofu by putting it on a towel and removing the excess moisture before using it.<br />
If your commitment to vegetarian living also meals the elimination of animal products such as milk and cheese, soy milk has become increasingly popular in the last few years with vegetarians and meat eaters alike because if its health and diet benefits.  Not only is it delicious to drink as a beverage, it can replace milk in recipes just as successfully.<br />
To eliminate animal based cheese from your diet, you might try a product called Tofutti.  They offer many varieties of vegan chesses including cheddar and mozzarella so you can enjoy that flavor with a clear conscience.  You can even find good substitutes for yogurt that is made from tofu or soy milk so you don&#8217;t have to cut popular tastes from your diet entirely.<br />
Tofu is such a great meat substitute and an outstanding nutritional source that you can even use it in traditional egg dishes such as quiches, custard, omelets or any other meals that would emphasize an egg taste.  If you mix pureed tofu with your recipe, you could virtually serve an egg dish even to a meat lover and they would not be able to tell that you had them eating vegetarian.<br />
As you continue to explore vegetarian cooking, there are a number of other meat replacements that do well in various cooking contexts.Tempah comes from a soy bean that has been fermented. Tempah works well once you braise it in a sauce for about an hour.  Once prepared it can be fried in flower and served with a sauce for flavor and be very satisfying.<br />
One of the big projects of making the change to a vegetarian lifestyle is learning ways to substitute healthy alternatives such as we have discussed to take meat and meat products out of your diet.  It will take some learning but that learning can be fun as you reinvent cooking and shopping to fit your new passion for vegetarian eating </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Because the younger generation is often more in touch with world culture than adults, teenagers are in general more attuned to the environmental movement, to issues involving organic farming and with the reasons for becoming a vegetarian.So as more and more teenagers experiment with vegetarianism, the better informed they are about what it really means to live meat free, the better. Then even if they do not continue their lifestyle as a vegetarian, their experience was an educational one and they will be well informed should be chose to continue as a vegetarian in later life.<br />
For parents of teenagers who wish to explore the vegetarian lifestyle, there are more reasons to celebrate than worry.  There are numerous health benefits to developing a vegetarian diet and if their new passion reduces the amount of fast food and junk food they eat, that&#8217;s a good thing.  You will naturally worry if your teenager is getting enough protein if they forgo the eating of meat.  By helping them learn about a well rounded vegan or vegetarian diet, they can derive all of their nutritional needs from natural foods and realize the many benefits of a vegetarian life along the way.<br />
A basic level of knowledge your teen should become educated about early on is the various scales of severity that they can &#8220;go for&#8221; in their move into a vegetarian lifestyle.  Many times a teenager just wants to be able to stake the claim to being a vegetarian.  In that case, simply giving up meat may be sufficient.  It is possible to design a program like that and still enjoy cheese, eggs, fish and diary and the transition to such a diet is not as extreme.<br />
Another word of caution that your teen may take to heart if they seek adult counsel about trying a vegetarian lifestyle is the difficulty of making the transition.  Teenagers are naturally impulsive and extreme so they may just &#8220;go vegetarian&#8221; in one day so they can go to school and lay claim to the title.  But they can still have that reward and plan to ease into a vegetarian discipline and avoid the problems that an extreme change of diet can cause, especially for active teen bodies.  For example, even if the new teen vegetarian just excludes meat from one meal, that still counts as starting their path toward a meat free life.  And if that is not sufficient for your youngster, just cutting meat out of lunch and dinner may be enough.<br />
One of the biggest concerns that you should help your teen be ware of is their vitamin needs in any new diet program.  While a switch to a total vegetable diet will have many positive influences, you should make sure they are getting enough protein and other essential vitamins that they used to get from meat in their diet.  Calcium, B12, zinc and iron are all essential vitamins especially to young people that must be found elsewhere if they decide to stop eating meat.  You can help your teenager enjoy a successful exploration of the vegetarian lifestyle and not face health risks by just being aware of their vitamin needs and making sure they get those vitamins in pill form until their food replacement program gets them way they need.<br />
It&#8217;s a tricky walk to guide a teenager through an interest in a vegetarian life because it is possible that many of the new foods they will have to get used to may not have the right tastes which will tempt them to give up the program.  While as a parent you can have an influence over making their home life vegetarian diet a success, you may need to help them understand that their choices are limited when eating out so they are prepared to make the sacrifice for the sake of staying within their vegetarian guidelines.<br />
Even though teenagers are compulsive and extreme, deep down they do not want to get sick or eat the wrong things.  It&#8217;s a balancing act to allow they to try things like becoming a vegetarian and for us as parents to both do all we can to make it a good experience but also to bring the wisdom they count on their elders for so they can explore the vegetarian lifestyle fully and then walk away form it if they wish and have learned a little bit about vegetarians along the way. </p>

this and how you got to where you are now.Dhru: Sure. First of all, again, thank you for having me here. And everybody who&#8217;s listening in, it&#8217;s an honor to be here. The thing that I enjoy the most is connecting with other individuals, and that drives everything that I do. So to connect and build communities, that&#8217;s been such an important part of my journey and that&#8217;s actually how I got started.<br />
My dietary journey started where at a conference I heard Ingrid Newkirk. She&#8217;s the president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She was talking about milk, blah, blah, blah this, and dairy cows blah, blah, blah, that and at that time my level of consciousness wasn&#8217;t hip to maybe the plight of certain animals. But she mentioned something that really hit me, she said, &#8220;Blah, blah, blah, if you get rid of milk then you might see your acne go away.&#8221; I was in high school at the time, I&#8217;m trying to talk to girls, I&#8217;m trying to be a more social individual, but even though I had been raised vegetarian, coming from an Indian background, I always dealt with acne. So when she said that I said, &#8220;Ok, you know what, she say&#8217;s that in about a month&#8217;s time you can start to see a major difference, so let me get rid of the dairy in my diet.&#8221; So when I got rid of the diary in my diet, naturally people ask you, &#8220;What the heck are you doing?&#8221; So you have to read up on it and you have to get educated a little bit and that&#8217;s when I finally started to understand and make the connection, that even though I was brought up vegetarian I had never really understood fully the connection between food and health.<br />
Then once that started, for a year and a half, as many people there have kind of gotten their start, I was a processed vegan. I was eating soy burgers and tofutti and carbitarian totally all the way. The finally one day at a health food store, in the aisle, I&#8217;m shopping for my produce and I see this guy who I&#8217;ve seen like a hundred times before shopping at the same organic co-op. And I always noticed that the whites of his eyes are really white, he was a very fit gentleman, he looked fairly young as well.<br />
So I went up to him and I finally said, &#8220;Hey bro, what is it that you actually do? What is it that you eat?&#8221; And he was like, &#8220;Oh, man I&#8217;m into raw food.&#8221; And I was like, &#8220;Raw food, what is that?&#8221; And over the next 40 minutes, this gentleman, who&#8217;s name is actually Nature Love, kind of over the next 45 minutes gave me a full breakdown of the relationship between food and why raw food matters and how it can improve the health. And from that day, which was the year 2001, that&#8217;s when my journey really began. It was on that day.Kevin: Wow, that&#8217;s pretty nice. Let&#8217;s just get right into it here. What are some of the biggest challenges that you encountered from that day till now that really stand out in you head, that say, &#8220;This is what happened, here&#8217;s how I dealt with it and here&#8217;s how I&#8217;m better because of it?&#8221;Dhru: Sure, absolutely. Well one of the things that I talk about a lot is the physiological challenges and I noticed that&#8230; I&#8217;ll give you a specific example, when I first started my journey after meeting Nature, the next day Nature, after I met up with him in the aisle, he came over to my place to show me and my roommate a little bit about raw foods. And when Nature told me that he was 40, and this guy literally, like&#8230; there&#8217;s photos of him on our website, welikeitraw.com, you can see how fit he is, how young he looks. When he told me he was 40-years-old I totally flipped. I was like, &#8220;OK, I&#8217;m doing this today.&#8221;<br />
So that was the first biggest challenge that I faced, I went 100 percent overnight embarking on raw foods. And what kept me going solid 100 percent for the first 8 months was discipline and excitement. Sheer excitement because I was looking forward to the future. I kept on thinking that in the future this will all be worth it and I&#8217;ll be at some place where my health and everything else will click and it won&#8217;t be as tough as it is now. And then discipline, which is simply one desire that&#8217;s trumping another desire. I had this desire to look fit, to be energetic, to be healthy, and then I also had this desire to eat a donut or eat this, or eat that.<br />
But my desire for being fit and healthy was strongest. But the challenge with discipline is, after a certain time, because discipline comes from a place of desire, discipline will always fail you. At some point in time discipline will always fail you because resisting your desires is&#8230; well it&#8217;s resisting your desires. It&#8217;s still a desire that&#8217;s inside of you. So for eight months solid I was going through the physiological challenges of wanting to stick to this thing, I felt good, but I had all these desires inside to try different foods, to eat different things.<br />
And it was right around that point, that after I, at the time I considered it &#8220;&#8216;failing.&#8221; I failed on my raw food diet by yo-yoing back and forth; I realized that there was a better way, a smarter way, a more intelligent way to approach diet. And, yes there were some very practical things that I did to improve my relationship with food. Having more green smoothies, having some transitional foods, things like that.<br />
But overall I saw that the biggest shift, the thing that benefited me the most, and now I&#8217;m seeing that it&#8217;s benefiting so many other people as well too, is that to actually ask yourself, &#8220;Why am I doing this in the first place? Am I waiting for the future to be better than the present moment? Am I doing this because someday I think things will be better?&#8221; It&#8217;s all right to have goals, it&#8217;s all right to have health goals, it&#8217;s all right to build a foundation, but the biggest challenge that I see is that a lot of people have, regardless of whatever dietary regimen they&#8217;re trying to follow, if they&#8217;re trying to just eat healthier, or exercise more, they are their biggest enemy because of these physiological battles they play with themselves back and forth.<br />
It&#8217;s easy to open up a book and know what to do. There are so many nutrition books and websites that are out there that give you great information now, especially with things like Goggle. And you can see what you can do.<br />
The same thing goes with exercise. But when you look at it, it&#8217;s not that people have a problem with information they have this physiological battle with identifying themselves with certain goals and living in the future instead of bringing their attention back into the present moment.Kevin: So you said in that first eight months you were living in the future, correct?Dhru: Yeah, I was living in the future. I was just constantly thinking that things will be better, it&#8217;ll be easier. I&#8217;m eating towards some future goal; I&#8217;m eating towards some future goal of being fit in my ideal version of what I had as fitness in my head. And then also along with that I was identifying with something, my ego was identifying with the concept of being 100 percent raw.<br />
Which, I&#8217;m sure Kevin, you&#8217;ve seen with the excellent work that you do, a lot of people probably write in to you that say they need to be 100 percent raw but they can&#8217;t. And that&#8217;s just some arbitrary goal. That doesn&#8217;t mean that I was actually any healthier, I was just fixated on this concept of being 100 percent raw.<br />
So instead of being 100 percent healthy and just enjoying and having a beautiful relationship with food, I was focused on this arbitrary idea of being 100 percent raw because I thought that it would bring me something that wasn&#8217;t something that I had with me right then and there at that moment. I was looking to diet as a way to fulfill me, which is an exact example of people that have really bad challenges with food. They&#8217;re looking to food for fulfillment. People that go through, I don&#8217;t want to speak personally, because I haven&#8217;t gone through this, but from what I&#8217;ve read, individuals that suffer through bulimia and other eating disorders, often what they&#8217;re looking for in certain ways is that they treat food as a vehicle to fulfillment, to fulfill them even if they don&#8217;t want to eat it. They&#8217;re rejecting food as a way to fulfillment with something to fulfill themselves with something that isn&#8217;t with them right then and there.<br />
I know it starts to become really abstract, but the easiest way to say it is that just take a look at anything that you&#8217;re doing in your life right now. And if you&#8217;re running off of shear discipline, if you&#8217;re running off the hope that someday in the future that you&#8217;ll make it, the chances are that you&#8217;re going to face so many more struggles along your journey.<br />
As opposed to the flip side is, everybody wants a challenge, everybody is down for a good challenge and the difference between a challenge and a struggle is the added dimension of resistance. When you go through a struggle, when you&#8217;re yo-yoing in your diet, when you can&#8217;t stick to your exercise plan, when you&#8217;re having a hard time doing something that you want to do, that&#8217;s a struggle.<br />
And what accompanies a struggle is resistance. You&#8217;re resisting something; you&#8217;re resisting something that you&#8217;re not ready to be at a level that you want to be at. Maybe you need to go slower. Whatever it is that you&#8217;re resisting, because you&#8217;re resisting it you&#8217;re using discipline as a way to kind of mask that, to kind of keep your eyes not focused on the total picture. And then you end up sending yourself back further because you haven&#8217;t actually taken baby steps to build a proper foundation in whatever journey you&#8217;re trying to make progress in. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Fats are an essential part of any well-balanced diet, including a vegetarian diet. Fats are made of smaller units &#8211; called fatty acids. These fatty acids may be saturated, mono-unsaturated or polyunsaturated. Saturated and mono-unsaturated fats are not necessary in a vegetarian diet as they can be made in the human body. However, two polyunsaturated fatty acids &#8211; linoleic acid (omega 6) and linolenic acid (omega 3) &#8211; cannot be manufactured by the body and must be provided in the diet. Fortunately, they are widely available in vegetarian/vegan plant foods. Evidence is increasing that omega 6 (found in foods like vegetable oils such as corn, safflower and sesame) and especially omega 3 (found in flax, walnuts, avocados, almonds and olive and canola oil) fats are beneficial for a range of conditions, including heart disease, cancer, immune system deficiencies and arthritis. Healthy fats and oils play active roles in every stage of the body&#8217;s healing, building, and maintenance processes. In fact, they are as important to an active individual&#8217;s body as amino acids, minerals, and vitamins. Healthy fats and oils help convert light and sound into electrical nerve impulses, remove potentially toxic substances from sensitive tissue, and provide strength to cell membranes. The following vegetarian menu sample shows how easy it is for essential fatty acids to be a part of your every day vegetarian diet. Offer your child a wide variety of grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and soy products, keep it simple and make it fun, and they&#8217;ll learn good eating habits that will last them a lifetime. Children raised on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes grow up to be slimmer and healthier and even live longer than their meat-eating friends. It is much easier to build a nutritious diet from plant foods than from animal products, which contain saturated fat, cholesterol, and other substances that growing children can do without. As for essential nutrients, plant foods are the preferred source because they provide sufficient energy and protein packaged with other health-promoting nutrients such as fiber, antioxidant vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. The complex carbohydrates found in whole grains, beans, and vegetables provide the ideal energy to fuel a child&#8217;s busy life. Encouraging the consumption of brown rice, whole wheat breads and pastas, rolled oats, and corn, as well as the less common grains barley, quinoa, millet, and others, will boost the fiber and nutrient content of a child&#8217;s diet. In addition, it will help steer children away from desiring sugary sweet drinks and treats. And though children need protein to grown, they don&#8217;t need high-protein, animal-based foods. Different varieties of grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits supplies plenty of protein, making protein deficiency very unlikely. Very young children need a bit more healthy fats in their diets than their parents. Healthier fat sources include soybean products, avocados, and nut butters. Parents will want to make sure their child&#8217;s diet includes a regular source of vitamin B-12, which is needed for healthy nerve function and blood. Vitamin B-12 is abundant in many commercial cereals, fortified soy and rice milks, and nutritional yeast. In this excerpt, Dr. Gabriel Cousens answers questions about the safety of fasting, losing weight and smoking cessation with fasting.The Fountain of Youth World Summit with Dr. Gabriel Cousens, the founder of Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center and author of &#8220;Conscious Eating&#8221; and &#8220;Spiritual Nutrition.&#8221;KEVIN: Some people will say fasting is unhealthy. What do you have to say about that?GABRIEL: Well, there is a quote from Atheneus, a Greek physician, he said, &#8220;Fasting cures disease, dries up bodily humors, puts demons to flight, gets rid of the impure thoughts, makes the mind clear, and the heart pure, and the body sanctified, and raises humanity to the throne of God.&#8221; And again, you&#8217;re talking about, you know, 2000 years of observation. Fasting is extremely safe. Now, let&#8217;s qualify what we say, when we say fasting is extremely safe. We are talking about a 1-week fast, extremely safe.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: Humans on water can go 40 days and may naturally push on it. We do not recommend that at all and I just can go a 100 days. We do green juice fasting here. We don&#8217;t use any foods because it is way too sweet and it creates sugar imbalances and aggravates diabetes and hypoglycemia, which we don&#8217;t like to do. We use green juices and in the juices, you get the minerals and the enzymes which help stimulate and support the fasting process. The problem with water fasting, while we don&#8217;t really recommend it and try to discourage people, is that even though you obviously get detoxification from it, you get really weak and so you can&#8217;t really enjoy life in the same way. The second thing is the mineral deficiencies can show up being the heart palpitations and other kind of weaknesses that are actually potentially dangerous. We don&#8217;t have that on juice test. So, those are the big things, plus you got the enzymes in the vital life force. I mean, there&#8217;s vital life force. We only at the Tree of Life, we only use organic.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: And it is fresh, very very fresh, like within a few minutes. So people are getting the tremendous vital life force in nature. We said that earth and water elements are being really actively pooled into the system. This is really safe. We&#8217;ve been doing this for, you know, since 1988. Well, that&#8217;s quite a few years. That&#8217;s almost 20 years now.KEVIN: Sure.GABRIEL: And no one has really, really had problem. Water fasting, different things. So there may be a crossover. People say fasting, end. Now, there&#8217;s another thing that we need to understand is that going without food is immediately threatening the people. Why? Because the Americans overeat. And why do they overeat? Not just because they like being the numbness of bowel toxicity, which is what happens, you get numbed out when you overeat, but it is a way of suppressing emotions.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: I am depressed. I am going to treat myself, you know, or I am going to celebrate, so you eat all those kinds of junk food. I don&#8217;t know what kind of a celebration it is, but apparently some people say this is a celebration.KEVIN: A-ha.GABRIEL: And so, this is the point, and does that make sense? This fear because it goes into an ego defense called eating, if you see what I am saying.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: And the fact is we can live a really long time without eating food, you know, on liquids. You do not have to, but a week fast is completely safe.KEVIN: Right. And what are some of the longevity benefits from not eating as much? I guess it&#8217;s the best way to say it. What are some of the studies on that? What are some of the things that have been proven to show that this is the case?GABRIEL: That is a good question. Dr. Spindler who is a biochemist at the UC Riverside, published in Science, the magazine, in 2001 a research he did with rats and he underfed them 40%, and after 1 month, the rats had a 400% increase in the anti-aging gene expression. He was using 1100 gene chip-type system at 400% and also anti-aging and anti-inflammatory. So what he concluded, now there&#8217;s lots of research since the early 1900s that the less you eat, the longer you live, that&#8217;s clear. But you usually thought it was actually just slowing the aging process down, right?KEVIN: A-ha.GABRIEL: But now we are talking something different after Spindler&#8217;s research. You&#8217;re actually activating the anti-aging genes. You actually had the potential to reverse the aging process. That is the whole of the statement.KEVIN: Wow. It does not stop, it&#8217;s reversed.GABRIEL: Right.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: And what happens when you are fasting? Fasting usually begins in the 2nd or 3rd day and when the body goes into what we call autolysis where it begins going after the dead and dying cells, OK, and clearing them out. The pre-cancer cells and the not so healthy cells. And so that process speeds up. So by the end of the fast by 7 days, you have increased the healthy vibrant cells and you have decreased the dead and dying the cells, so you&#8217;re really into a rejuvenation process. You see what I am saying?KEVIN: Yes.GABRIEL: Whereas before, when you&#8217;re toxic, there are a lot more dead and dying cells because they had all the toxins and then they couldn&#8217;t survive or they are half alive. That&#8217;s how most people feel anyway, they&#8217;re half alive.KEVIN: Sure. I&#8217;ve heard that before. Yeah.GABRIEL: And that&#8217;s what we are talking about. But the research is, the literature is enormous and the basic summary of all the research, animal research and human research, the cultures that are long-lived like the Karmacoma Indians in Ecuador I think in the 100s, is that their calorie intake is half as much as other people.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: Because they&#8217;re primarily, not a 100%, but primarily vegan.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: So those seem to be the 2 things. Eating the animal products can secrete a lot more toxicity and speed up the aging process.KEVIN: OK. And now let&#8217;s say I wanted to put together a fast on my own, I mean , is that advised to 7-day fast on your own? I mean, would you lock yourself in a room with a juicer? I mean, what kind of protocol would someone consider taking?GABRIEL: Well, what really happens here is that it&#8217;s really a generally good idea to have somebody guide you the first time.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: Because as a holistic physician, as a kind of yogi, you know, I did the 40-day fast but that&#8217;s an exception. I do not recommend that for most people. It&#8217;s not that safe you know, OK. So it&#8217;s really good to have a run through.KEVIN: A-ha.GABRIEL: In about a year or two, I will be coming out with the book on spiritual fasting but right now I&#8217;m writing a book on diabetes and I don&#8217;t really have time. But after that then what we see a pattern as what people will do, maybe fast at home and may be come here twice a year, so they&#8217;re doing it that way. What you want is an optimal situation where you are vitalizing the body, so where you can get good sun, fresh air, healthy water, and you know, clean organic juices. That&#8217;s what you want.KEVIN: Yes. So you wouldn&#8217;t recommend anyone go into their high stress job?GABRIEL: Right. Because the body doesn&#8217;t open up. The body&#8230;that&#8217;s work, in that the body has to be able to relax to let go to heal itself.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: And if you&#8217;re going to continue, you can do it. You can lose weight that way. .Let&#8217;s put it that way.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: And aside from losing weight, there&#8217;s not nearly as much healing because a high stress job tends to shut the body down. It doesn&#8217;t tend to go into that kind of place where it really works to heal.KEVIN: And do you recommend a fast for people who want to lose weight?GABRIEL: That&#8217;s the best way to lose weight.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: For the last 5000 years, it&#8217;s been the best way. We have started 2 programs here. One is what we call juice feasting which involves really liquids and juices, 4 juices a day and then blended fruit.KEVIN: A-ha.GABRIEL: And people could be on that for a 100-120 days if they do really, really, really well, and they lose weight gradually, you know. In live food itself, we could lose about 100 pounds in a year.KEVIN: Wow.GABRIEL: Because with live food you can eat half as much. Because when you cook your food, you lose 50% of the protein and 70%-80% of vitamins and minerals and up to 95% or so of the phytonutrients. Well, the math is simple. If you just simply go on live food, you eat half as much. That means you take in half as many calories. You&#8217;re taking double the nutrition but half the calories and the result is you lose weight.KEVIN: A 100 pounds in a year. That&#8217;s pretty intense.GABRIEL: Yes. But it happens gradually and you&#8217;re not doing any physiological tricks. This is very important. Fasting is not a physiological trick. You&#8217;re actually helping the body accelerate the process. Now, during that time, your stomach tends to shrink and so you will not be that hungry. You really start to lose that interest. So we have, you know, let&#8217;s say, a lot of people have done 70-day fast, 85-day fast for weight loss. And that&#8217;s usually people who are between 100-200 pounds overweight.KEVIN: Right.GABRIEL: It&#8217;s a very good thing that is also a very good for smoking. Agatha Trash, and I don&#8217;t know if she is alive but she and her husband are the 2 physicians at the head of anti-smoking clinic in Arkansas and they saw over 3000 successful cases of helping people to get off cigarettes. Why? Well, fasting helps you lose your cellular memory for your toxins. OK. And it also alkalinizes you. The result is that when you&#8217;re alkalinize, it&#8217;s a lot easier to break the nicotine habit.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: The moment that you get 5 days, it&#8217;s really good, 7 days is really excellent. Now when you use a few other homeopathic remedies and things like that, pack and release to help people break their smoking habits. But then we also recommend the psychological aspect and that&#8217;s why we use the Zero Point Course, which we use to do 1 day afterwards. So, they&#8217;re linked, but fasting is really good for all of us. It&#8217;s so simple. It&#8217;s really quite simple.KEVIN: Right. What are some of the best things to juice? What are some of the best things that will get you the most minerals?GABRIEL: I think the thing that&#8217;s most important is the organic.KEVIN: OK.GABRIEL: And we get whatever is in season although we use a lot of cucumbers and celery because they have lots of minerals particularly sodium which we need, healthy sodium, and flushes out the toxic sodium in the system. And then we get whatever greens are in season. And mostly, we are growing a lot of our own, but we also will use beet and carrot diluted, which is good for the liver.KEVIN: A-ha.GABRIEL: But what were finding is it doesn&#8217;t matter. We really&#8230;basically, if you&#8217;re doing juice fasting, everything gets better. </p>

Renegade Water Secrets with Dhrumil Purohit, the lead contributory, visionary and creator of welikeitraw.com and giveittomeraw.com.Kevin:  Let&#8217;s get this abstract and let&#8217;s nail it down here. Can you explain what you said by a beautiful relationship with food? Because that sounds really appealing, what does that mean to you?Dhru:  Absolutely. So nobody would ever want to become a vegetarian or a vegan or start eating more raw foods, or even just people, it doesn&#8217;t matter what you eat, most people on this call are probably thinking about including more whole foods in their diet. Nobody wants to do that and make their lives more complicated. If eating healthier would make your life more complicated then why the heck would you want to do it?<br />
So what I see as a beautiful relationship with food is a relationship where you no longer are fearful of counting calories, you no longer are fearful about, is this food going to bring me this level of disease. You&#8217;re no longer fearful of getting the level of nutrition that you want to. And you also, on a daily basis are not fearful of what you&#8217;re going to eat. When you think about it, most individuals think so much about food. Especially if they&#8217;re visiting or traveling another country or just some other city, they think so much about food. What am I going go eat next? They&#8217;re a slave to whatever they eat. And nobody wants to make that worse by embarking on a natural diet of some sort, whether that be raw foods, or whole foods or whatever else.<br />
So having a beautiful relationship with food is using food as a vehicle of nourishment instead of treating food as the destination. We all know people that are out there that get so caught up with being perfect when it comes to their diet that they spend more time thinking about food and stressing about food then they do enjoying life. Food is not the ultimate goal, it&#8217;s just a vehicle to take us somewhere, to enjoy life further, to live more in the present moment. Food is not that destination where we want to end up. We don&#8217;t want to be reading labels all day long. We don&#8217;t want to be using the Internet to count calories. We don&#8217;t want to be researching every single new supplement that comes out there, hoping that it&#8217;s going to fix us or bring this to us in our life. So having a beautiful relationship with food is having an authentic relationship with food, when you use it as a vehicle to take you to where you want to go in your life and to nourish your body, rather than a destination. Does that make sense Kevin?Kevin: Yeah. How do you know you&#8217;re there?Dhru: Well, the simplest way to look at it is to look at your life right now. Are you struggling? Right? As I mentioned, the difference between a struggle and a challenge is only one thing, and it&#8217;s resistance. So just look at your day. Look at your day, and at the end of the day when you think about food, do you feel good? Or do you feel not so good, or other than good? Right? So that&#8217;s the easiest way to look at it. Nobody can tell you, right?<br />
I&#8217;m turning 26 in a couple of months. I&#8217;m probably half the age of most individuals that are probably listening in or even reading my websites that are out there. I&#8217;m not claiming to know anything. All I&#8217;m simply doing is saying that, let&#8217;s look at the most basic and fundamental things. Take a look at your life. Take a look at your relationship with food. Look at today. It&#8217;s 8pm on the east coast, a little bit earlier on the west coast, look at your day. Did you have a beautiful relationship with food? Were you obsessing about it? Were you scouring the Internet or the forum boards worrying about this and that and other things? It&#8217;s all right to do some research and say, &#8216;Where can I find the best source of B12?&#8217; But fretting about stuff, worrying about stuff, that&#8217;s not a beautiful relationship with food. So the easiest way to do it is take a look at today, and see where you ended up. Are you happy? Are you happy where you are? Or are you at least complete where you are? You may want to make some progress, but are you complete where you are today? Or are you worried? Are you fearful? Are you stressing about where you aren&#8217;t?Kevin: That&#8217;s great. You said that it&#8217;s not resisting desires, and people do have desires from time to time. What do you suggest? Desires can be translated to cravings. We got a couple questions about cravings. So desires, cravings, it&#8217;s very similar. How do you suggest that someone deals with that based on the philosophy that you&#8217;re explaining now?Dhru: Sure. I&#8217;m not saying that people shouldn&#8217;t take practical steps. Right around 8 months is when I started experiencing all these levels of cravings for foods that I didn&#8217;t really even enjoy previously. And I thought it was that my diet wasn&#8217;t set up appropriately to get rid of those cravings. And on a practical level, there were some things that I needed to adjust. I could use more greens in my diet to bring in more minerals so that I wouldn&#8217;t have as much cravings. Because if you&#8217;re having a lot of cravings for food, sometimes it&#8217;s very nutritionally based. You may just not be getting enough minerals in your diet. So there&#8217;s some practical things that you can do, such as having green smoothies a couple times a day. Bring in more green juice into your diet. You know, it depends on what area specifically that you notice the cravings that show up.<br />
But generally, what I find is that most of the cravings that show up for people, they&#8217;re simply coming from a place of, &#8220;I&#8217;m not treating myself. I&#8217;ve been really good now, and I&#8217;m not treating myself or I&#8217;m denying myself.&#8221; It&#8217;s like being bored. Most of the individuals that have cravings, I would say, that email me are people that are having cravings or are feeling like they are bored with their diet, or that they should be treating themselves because they&#8217;re not. So in that particular case, what I suggest is that, OK, let&#8217;s just look at it. First of all, I would say, are you yo-yoing? Right? And I just want to explain that a little bit further for people that are not familiar. Yo-yoing is people who treat life, and specifically diet, with good and bad. They have their good and bad days. They have a day that&#8217;s really good, and they&#8217;re eating almost all raw food or whole foods, and all organic and things like that. And then the next day, they&#8217;re binging on a pizza. Not just eating a slice, but they&#8217;re eating like a whole half a pizza, or they&#8217;re drinking like five cups of coffee when they haven&#8217;t had coffee all week long. So that&#8217;s yo-yoing.<br />
Now, if you&#8217;re going through yo-yoing, then my suggestion is actually to scale back whatever dietary regimen you&#8217;re trying to do. Let&#8217;s take, for instance, raw foods specifically. If you&#8217;re trying to eat mostly or all raw foods, and you notice that you&#8217;re having a lot of challenges yo-yoing, take a step back and find some transitional foods that you can eat on a daily basis that are still good for you. Kevin I know you&#8217;re a very big fan of quinoa, right? So including thinking like quinoa, including things like steamed vegetables, that still are things that you can enjoy, that you might feel that are warm foods if you&#8217;re craving warm foods, that might give you more substance. It&#8217;s better to take a step back than go back and forth between this yo-yoing exercise.<br />
Now for other individuals who might just have a desire here and there that might show up, and if they&#8217;re doing good overall, and if they&#8217;re fine using discipline, then use it! By all means, if discipline has worked for you so far, who am I to tell you not to use it? What I would suggest though, is notice if your dietary journey stops becoming fun, all right? Notice if you&#8217;re bringing more stress into it. Notice if you&#8217;re adding the dimension of resistance, if you&#8217;re not actually enjoying the journey anymore. And if you notice that you&#8217;re not enjoying it anymore, then there may be a time to also reevaluate and say, &#8220;What could I be doing differently here?&#8221;<br />
Or just even taking a look at your goals. What is my goal here? What am I trying to do? Right? What am I trying to actually achieve here with my diet? Is losing those last ten pounds, is that it? And then after that, then what? What&#8217;s the next thing after that? Right? Sometimes, what I find, Kevin, is that simply by just being attached to a particular goal, that often creates those levels of desire, because people are so fixated on the goal. &#8220;OK, I need to get here, I need to get here, I need to get here.&#8221; That they start tripping up, that they stop focusing on the day to day things that they did in the beginning, and that they&#8217;re so focused on the goal that they start stumbling on the fact that they&#8217;re not making progress fast enough. &#8220;I&#8217;m not doing it quick enough.&#8221; And just by reevaluating it, I often find, just by taking an opportunity to actually reevaluate those goals, just by taking an opportunity to reflect on those goals. Sometimes people are able to make tremendous progress and realize, &#8220;Wow! I&#8217;m chasing after my tail. It&#8217;s a valid goal, and it&#8217;s a good thing to achieve, but I&#8217;m so fixated on it that I can&#8217;t think about anything else. I can&#8217;t focus on anything else.&#8221; </p>

But now, golden microalgae oil is ready to replace medical fish oil for heart and brain health supplement needs.Some types of fish contain relatively high levels of mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], dioxins and other environmental contaminants. In general, older, larger predatory fish contain the highest level of contaminants. Fish can also contain significant levels of methyl mercury, considered one of the more dangerous food contaminants today. PCBs and methyl mercury are believed to have long half-lives in the body and can accumulate in people who consume fish on a frequent basis. Recommendations currently suggest limiting intake of fish to twice per week.Can docosahexaenoic acid omega-3 (DHA)-rich microalgae oil function as a universal fish oil alternative? Based on the effects and benefits of fish oil, it will be important to know how well DHA-rich oil compares in clinical efficacy. Early clinical indications strongly support equal or greater efficacy of microalgae oil compared to fish oil for many treatments, particularly those related to cardio-protection, Alzheimer&#8217;s prevention, and lowering triglycerides.The DHA-rich omega-3 oil produced from microalgae has undergone extensive analysis, showing that the individual components of the extracted oils are all present elsewhere in normal foods consumed by communities. Thus, DHA-rich oil is inherently safe in its fatty acid and sterol components, a fact known since 1997.The oil&#8217;s safety is further supported by historically safe use of this oil and fish oils of similar active ingredient compositions. In addition, microalgae oil safety is guaranteed. The knowledge of human metabolism for each individual component in microalgae oil and a lack of adverse reactions are conclusive. There have been no reports in the literature of allergic or toxic responses to microalgae oil, plus it is approved for infant formula, pregnant and nursing mothers, the elderly and people of all ages.It has been shown that its individual ratios of polyunsaturated fatty acids vary according to food source. For DHA-rich microalgae oil from, the key points to note are how this golden colored microalgae oil matches the human body&#8217;s direct needs. For example, 9 out of 10 of the omega-3s in the human body are a DHA molecule. Notably the Chromista strain has very high levels of DHA (C22 DHA n-3) for help building up the total omega-3s in the body. For naming purposes, C22 refers to the chain length of 22 carbons and the n-3 refers to the omega-3.C22 chains are abundant in the brain. Also noted is the moderate content of docosapentaenoic acid (C22 DPA n-6) in the concentrated nutritional oil. The n-6 refers to omega-6 form. Brain beneficial C22 DPA n-6 is an important building block, present in a wide variety of foods and it does not have the negative properties of other omega-6 forms. It is also relatively abundant in eggs and breast milk. The ratio of C22 DPA n-6 to C22 DHA n-3 in human breast milk is reported to range normally from 1:1 to 1:6. The ratio of the C22 DPA n-6 (DPA) to C22 DHA n-3 (DHA) in the Chromista oil is 1:3, the median range of breast milk. Still, DPA and DHA are some of the hardest &#8216;good&#8217; fats to get in the diet without supplementation. Golden microalgae oil provides both of these from one source.C20 chains are abundant in the cardiovascular system. The golden colored oil also has appropriate levels of the &#8216;good&#8217; anti-inflammatory EPA (C20 EPA n-3) to neutralize inflammatory arachidonic acid (C20 ARA n-6) in the system, which may be elevated in dislipidemic individuals and those with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD).Microalgae oil strains have been developed by conventional techniques and no Genetic Modifications were used or needed. An independent panel of experts in the US has concluded that DHA-rich oil from microalgae can be &#8216;Generally Regarded as Safe&#8217; as a nutritional food ingredient or supplement. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re one of the approximately 67% of Americans that are wired into the internet, there&#8217;s a good chance that sometime in the last 24 hours you&#8217;ve received at least one spam email promoting the latest and greatest diet pill or weight loss program. These diet products promise fast weight loss results, often without any effort or exercise. The never-ending promise of a weight loss pill that actually works keeps us hoping for eventual success. </p>
<p>At the same time, we&#8217;re continually inundated with news of the most recent diet and how this time it&#8217;s really going to work for us. The South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet, the Atkins Diet, the Low Carb Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, the LA Weight Loss Diet, the Weight Watchers Diet, the Diabetic Diet, the Low Cholesterol Diet, the Prescription Pill Diet, the 3 Day Diet, the Low Fat Diet, the High Protein Diet, the Maker Diet, the Liquid Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, the Fad Diet, the Blood Type Diet, the GI Diet, the Vegetarian Diet, the Vegan Diet, the Detox Diet, the Dash Diet, the Candida Diet, the Gluten Free Diet, the Hollywood Diet, the Negative Calorie Diet, the 1200 Calorie Diet, the Raw Food Diet, the Phentermine Diet, the High Fiber Diet, the Macrobiotic Diet, the Science Diet, the Lemonade Diet, the Scarsdale Diet, the Diverticulitis Diet and the Fat Flush Diet are all examples of diet plans that promise to help us achieve quick weight loss. </p>
<p>Crash diets, weight loss pills and get-thin-quick gimmicks are more prevalent than ever, yet two-thirds of our population is still overweight. Even more startling is the fact that approximately one-third of the people in our country are clinically obese. </p>
<p>With all of these ‘solutions&#8217; available to us, why is it that obesity trends have been alarming enough to prompt the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) to label obesity a national epidemic? Why are we still, as a nation, getting fatter? It&#8217;s certainly not because we&#8217;re not trying. </p>
<p>On the contrary, as a nation we&#8217;re trying harder than ever to lose fat through diet and other weight loss products. As reported by CNN on 1-14-05 &#8220;Americans were expected to spend more than $40 billion in 2004 on weight control pills, gym memberships, diet plans and related foods, estimates Marketdata Enterprises, which studies the weight loss industry.&#8221; Furthermore, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that 80 percent of overweight individuals and almost 87 percent of obese individuals are trying to lose or maintain their weight. </p>
<p>As reported by mygoals.com, 80 percent of Americans made a New Year&#8217;s resolution in 2005. A whopping 26 percent of those resolutions were to improve overall health and fitness, making this the top category for self-improvement. This year was no anomaly, either, according to Amy O&#8217;Connor, deputy editor of Prevention magazine: &#8220;Fifty-nine million people every year resolve to lose weight.&#8221; </p>
<p>So, is there a healthy diet product out there that will actually work? More than likely, the answer is yes. Although there is quite a bit of fraudulent weight loss merchandise on the market today, there is also (somewhere out there) a diet program and weight loss plan that will work for us. The challenge is to find that diet product or diet plan. </p>
<p>-&gt; Repeat Business: </p>
<p>The diet and weight loss industry is a huge money making machine. According to Marketdata Enterprises, the annual revenue for the diet industry was over $30 billion dollars in 1990. A 2005 report by Stanford University documents that the consumer diet industry is now approximately $44 billion and growing. With all this money flowing around, haven&#8217;t we as a country spent enough to fix the obesity problem once and for all? </p>
<p>How can the diet industry keep making more and more money, year after year? After all, $44 billion dollars is a lot of cash! The answer to that question is simple: repeat business. &#8220;98% of today&#8217;s dieters gain the weight back in 5 years. 90% of those individuals end up gaining back more than they lost originally, due to the body&#8217;s panic and efforts to stabilize metabolic rates over the long term&#8221; (Source: Stanford University; stanford.edu). </p>
<p>How do the diet-promoters get all that repeat business? The diet industry is a very unique enterprise in that, when it fails someone, they rarely blame the product. We are hard-pressed to find another business where, if the product doesn&#8217;t work, we blame ourselves. All too often, after giving up on yet another diet program, we find ourselves thinking &#8220;Well, I guess I&#8217;m just not a good enough dieter.&#8221; The tendency is for us to believe that we failed the diet rather than the other way around. </p>
<p>Apply this same logic to the automotive industry, and it soon becomes clear just how faulty this line of reasoning really is. What would happen if we take our car in to the mechanic for repairs and when we returned to pick it up he told us that although we still had to pay the bill, he was unable to fix the problem? Would we willing pay the bill anyway and just say &#8220;Oh well, I guess it&#8217;s just a bad car?&#8221; Of course not! That would be ridiculous! But that&#8217;s exactly what we do when it comes to diets. </p>
<p>-&gt; One Size Does Not Fit All: </p>
<p>What we need to realize is that there is probably a weight loss product or weight loss plan out there that will work for us, but it may not be the same one our friends or co-workers used. To find the best weight loss program for us, we absolutely must realize that one size does not fit all. What worked for our sibling or spouse may not work for us, and what works for us may not work for them. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s probably safe to say that any diet supplement has helped somebody, but it&#8217;s also true that no weight loss drug or plan has helped everybody. Each person has a unique metabolism and very individual nutritional needs, so no single plan will work for everyone. </p>
<p>-&gt; How To Find The Right Weight Loss Diet: </p>
<p>Some fat burner products on the market today do indeed work. Others are a complete rip-off. How do you tell the difference? Where do you go for accurate and reliable weight loss information? </p>

<p>When seeking a healthy weight loss plan, it&#8217;s important that no food be strictly forbidden. There should not be any (or many) foods that we avoid completely 100% of the time. Why? Because that sets us up for failure! For example, if fudge is one of our favorites and we force ourselves to NOT eat fudge at the holiday party, then for many of us what we&#8217;ve done is set ourselves up for a binge fudge-festival. </p>
<p>Avoiding our favorite foods entirely is a too much self-deprivation for most people, and this sets us up for binge-eating. That&#8217;s a recipe for disaster!  </p>
<p>A much better approach is to enjoy foods in moderation. Watch those serving sizes! Enjoy and savor one piece of fudge! It&#8217;s better to enjoy one piece of fudge and then stop than attempt to deprive ourselves entirely, only to end up eating the whole pan. </p>
<p>A good diet and nutrition program will also help us keep in mind the cost of the foods we eat. We&#8217;re not talking about dollars and cents here, but the FITNESS cost of the food. When picking up that fudge, keep in mind what it will cost to enjoy it. When picking up a plate at the buffet table, let&#8217;s take a moment to pause and think to ourselves: &#8220;The cost of this fudge will be an extra _____ minutes of exercise&#8230;..is that worth it to me?&#8221; Maybe. Maybe not. That&#8217;s for each of us to decide on our own. </p>
<p>The point is that we should be conscious of our food decisions. No foods are forbidden entirely, but we do need to watch our portion sizes and carefully consider the cost of each food. Any good weight management program will incorporate these concepts and also will be approved by your doctor. </p>
<p>-&gt; How To Find The Right Weight Loss Supplement: </p>
<p>Perhaps even more so than with weight loss diets, when searching for weight loss supplements it is critical to rely on the advice of your physician. The careful and supervised use of weight loss diet pills, combined with a sensible diet and regular exercise, can lead to quick weight loss and even easy weight loss (or at least easier than you expected). </p>
<p>Beware, however, the supplement scams on the market. It seems that every time we turn around we are blasted and bombarded with the latest, greatest, new and improved treatment for obesity. The gimmicks just keep coming. The sad truth is that few of these products work. Even fewer will result in real, permanent and lasting fat loss. A very few of the weight loss gimmicks on the market today are not only a consumer rip-off, but they are also quite dangerous&#8230;..even deadly. </p>
<p>As an example, consider the prescription diet drug Meridia. Does it help you lose weight? For some people, the answer is yes. For others, the answer is no. Can it kill you? The answer to this question seems to be a nervous &#8216;maybe&#8217;. &#8220;The consumer group Public Citizen had petitioned the Food and Drug Administration for a ban, citing Meridia users who died of heart problems as young as their 20s and 30s. Even before Meridia was approved for sale, the FDA knew it could increase users&#8217; blood pressure, the group contended.&#8221; (Source: cnn.com) </p>
<p>This week the FDA again refused to ban Meridia, even though whistleblower David Graham (an FDA drug safety officer) testified to Congress last fall that his agency was allowing five unsafe medicines to stay on the market, including Meridia.  </p>
<p>Another example of a dangerous weight loss drug is ephedra. Ephedra was banned in the United States last year, in part due to numerous deaths attributed to this popular weight loss supplement. On April 14 2005, a federal Judge in Utah reversed the short-lived ban on ephedra. Within minutes, spammers were filling our email boxes with messages to BUY BUY BUY before ephedra was banned again. </p>
<p>Yes, ephedra will help some people lose weight. Yes, ephedra is safe for some people in low doses. But there is that little nagging fact that people have DIED and that their deaths have been attributed to ephedra use&#8230;.. </p>
<p>Yet another example of a dangerous diet drug is steroids. For whatever reason, some people have decided that anabolic steroids are the best way to lose weight. Despite the well-documented and serious side-effects of steroid use, the lure of easy weight loss has caused many to throw caution to the wind. Perhaps the most concerning trend is steroid use among our teenage population: &#8220;Teens also listed steroids, growth hormone, amino acids and other potentially unhealthful products among those they&#8217;d tried in the previous year.&#8221; (Source: cnn.com) </p>
<p>There do exist, however, some diet supplements that work and are also quite safe. Again, it is never a good idea to begin any supplementation program without first seeking the advice and approval of your doctor. </p>
