			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Osteoporosis is a very serious disease of your bones that can lead to breakdown of the bone density, causing it to be weak enough that it is susceptible to breakage.  People sometimes do not believe osteoporosis to be serious, since it is a gradual disease with a gradual onset of symptoms. In other words, nobody that gets osteoporosis is metaphorically hit over the head with a crux of issues all at once.  Unlike cancer or another serious illness, there is no immediate life-threatening problem when one develops osteoporosis.  However, being diagnosed with osteoporosis can truly remove the quality of a person’s life. Luckily, there are precautions that can be taken to prevent the development of this disease which generally affects the elderly. It is very important to take measures early in life so as to avoid this progressive disease later on. </p>
<p>Exercise is a great way to fight osteoporosis early in life.  Believe it or not, exercise is critical for the prevention of weak bones and, besides its other positives, this is just another reason why exercise should be a daily part of your routine.  Any weight-bearing exercise is particularly good for osteoporosis, such as weight training, running, or other high-impact sports and activities.  While you have probably heard that running is hard on the knees or hips, in reality your bones are getting stronger the longer one continues this type of activity.  The striking and impact of your foot on the pavement or hard ground actually works to harden the bones to breakage over time. </p>
<p>Weight training is another very popular exercise that is good in preventing osteoporosis.  Weight training has become increasingly more popular over the years, and gym memberships have risen drastically as men, women and children alike can now be found lifting weights for good health.  Weight training also helps to increase bone density, as well as improve your posture, improve your mood, and many report an improvement in self-confidence. </p>
<p>Other than exercise, you can help prevent osteoporosis with certain supplements.  Some of the most common supplements for the prevention of osteoporosis are calcium and vitamin D.  Most people are aware that calcium is important for strong bones and teeth.  They hear it on commercials and their parents tell them from the time they are little to drink their milk. However, most people probably do not take it as seriously as they should.  It really is a good idea to supplement with calcium every day to help prevent osteoporosis down the road.  Calcium supports bone density and bone healing. </p>
<p>While it is true that milk and other dairy products are a good source of calcium, you may not be getting all the calcium you need from these sources.  If you are a vegetarian or vegan especially, who does not consume any dairy products, it is especially important for you to take a calcium supplement.  Broccoli and fortified orange juice contain good amounts of calcium, but you probably cannot stomach enough broccoli to make it worthwhile. </p>
<p>Vitamin D occurs naturally with sunshine, so getting your exercise outdoors can help provide you with the vitamin D you need.  Remember to wear your sunscreen, of course. While outside activity in the sun can be a wonderful and fun source of Vitamin D, you will likely not get enough of it without supplementation.  Some areas of the country are sunnier than others, and then there are the winter months to consider when people tend to stay indoors more often.  With the amount of Vitamin D supplements available, it can easily be incorporated into your daily routine. </p>
<p>In keeping up with your protein consumption, and also increasing your Vitamin C and Vitamin K intake, you can also help keep your bones stronger and prevent osteoporosis.  Again, you can do this by supplementing if you are uncertain as to whether your diet provides sufficient amounts of these important vitamins. </p>
<p>A supplement called glucosamine chondroitin, which is actually two supplements generally sold in a compound as one, is very helpful with joint pain associated with age and increased activity level.  While not directly helpful for the prevention of osteoporosis, it is used to treat osteoarthritis.  You may want to consider adding this supplement to help prevent the aches and pains that sometimes occur in your bones as you age and try to maintain the same level of activity and fitness. </p>
<p>Supplementing with these vitamins, minerals, and aminos can be very beneficial when used in combination with a healthy lifestyle and diet.  Make sure to keep your alcohol consumption in moderation for healthy bones as well as cut out any smoking habit you may have, since smoking and heavy drinking both increase the risk of osteoporosis.  Follow these simple rules and you will increase your chances of having strong, healthy bones for life. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are many terms that are misleading in the food advertising industry today. Think of how many times you see the following phrases plastered all over food containers:<br />
    * Fat Free<br />
    * Reduced Fat<br />
    * Low Fat<br />
    * Sugar Free<br />
    * No Added Sugar<br />
    * Diet [Insert Product Name Here]<br />
Let us examine some examples of nasty food that is supposed to be healthy:<br />
1. Diet Soda<br />
Why is it good? A sugar free version of the popular carbonated beverage that you can drink on the go.<br />
Why is it bad? OK, so soda is horrible for you, but take out the sugar and add in carcinogenic artificial sweeteners, combined with the artificial flavors and colors that are in all sodas, and you have a recipe for Tumor in a Can. Then of course we have the caffeine factor, which is linked to hyperactivity, high blood pressure, and can mess with your blood sugar.<br />
Instead choose: filtered water and the occasional glass of milk or goats milk<br />
2. Sushi made with white rice and imitation crab meat or vegetables<br />
Why is it good? Seaweed contains essential nutrients such as selenium, calcium, iodine, and omega-3 fats. Sushi is nearly always wrapped in seaweed.<br />
Why is it bad? This garbage does not deserve to be called sushi. They are just small, compact, high glycemic, high calorie, carbohydrate nuggets. There is not even much protein in these things. Eat 3-4 of them and you&#8217;ve had your serving for the day. Aside from that, imitation crab meat is not even good for you. It is mostly just a crab flavored tofu-like substance fortified with sugar, sugar, and more sugar.<br />
Instead choose: In order to get some healthy carbs, some high-quality protein, and the benefits of omega-3 fats, choose real sushi made with salmon or tuna. To make it even healthier, order sashimi instead of white rice.<br />
3. Reduced-Fat Peanut Butter<br />
Why is it good? All peanut butter provides a heart-healthy substantial quantity of monounsaturated fat.<br />
Why is it bad? Most commercial peanut butters are made with the same type of sugar that cake frosting is made with. Reducing the fat makes it even worse because even MORE nasty sugar is added and they contain less healthy fat. I would rather just eat the extra calories.<br />
Instead choose: Choose almonds or all natural organic peanut butter instead. Just remember to pour off the top layer of oil and replace it with olive oil if the resulting peanut brick is too stiff. Olive oil is very low in omega-6 fats.<br />
4. Fat-Free or Reduced Fat Salad Dressing<br />
Why is it good? Less fat means less calories. Plus that salad dressing fat is lard just like mayo and Crisco. Sick.<br />
Why is it bad? Firstly because when fat comes out, sugar goes in. Either that or artificial flavors and sweeteners. Secondly, since many vegetables are fat soluble, taking away the fat from the dressing means fewer of the salad nutrients will be absorbed into your body. This was confirmed by a study at Ohio State University wherein a higher fat salad dressing resulted in an increased uptake of the antioxidants lutein and beta-carotene.<br />
Instead choose: A salad dressing made with olive oil, or just use olive oil and vinegar as your salad dressing. If you try it you might like it.<br />
5. Anything made with Soy<br />
Why is it good? It&#8217;s not. But in the spirit of argument: vegetarians and vegans eat the stuff so they can get protein in their diets. Yay ::sarcasm:: Plus the stuff is apparently low in fat and an alternative to whey for the lactose intolerant.<br />
Why is it bad? Straight up, soy is linked to lower testosterone and increased estrogen in males, and is also linked to increased breast cancer in women. Soy also promotes hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer, and infertility. Soy is extremely destructive to infants, as it can effect development in many adverse ways.<br />
Instead choose: any high protein whole food such as brown rice, goats milk, coconut milk, almond milk, whole grains, nuts, seaweeds, seeds, beans, and lentils. As a side note, goats milk is considered one of the healthiest foods on the planet today, so give it a try.<br />
6. Fruit Juice, Dried Fruit, and Fruit Cocktail<br />
Why is it good? Well because fruit is good for you. It has a ton of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants; not to mention fiber.<br />
What is it bad? Fruit juice and fruit cocktail normally have sugar added. Some fruit cocktails come in a thick sugary syrup. You get no fiber from fruit juice, and the stuff usually has preservatives added to it.<br />
Instead choose: eat the whole fruit including the skin if possible, but limit it to one serving of fruit per meal/snack to avoid insulin spikes. If you must have fruit cocktail, choose one that comes packed in its own juices instead of syrup.<br />
7. Smartfood (Cheesy Popcorn)<br />
Why is it good? Because cheesy popcorn is oh so tasty.<br />
Why is it bad? Because you are really just eating the popcorn equivalent of potato chips. Seriously, compare total calories and you will find that you are not saving much on the calorie front by eating Smartfood instead of chips.<br />
Instead choose: get some spray butter, pop some plain popcorn, spray a light coat of spray butter on the popped corn, sprinkle various spices on the corn (but go easy on the salts), and shake it up in a bad. Now you have a low fat tasty treat.<br />
8. Beans packed in sugary syrups such as Boston Baked Beans<br />
Why is it good? Baked beans are good for you because these types of beans are loaded with fiber<br />
Why is it bad? The sugary syrup, just as much as in a can of soda, is just going to spike your blood sugar and insulin levels. This is never good for preventing heart disease or type II onset diabetes.<br />
Instead choose: Red kidney beans. These things are packed with protein and fiber, and can be mixed with any sort of salad or pasta. Sometimes I enjoy kidney beans straight out of the can; no cooking, just wash and chow.<br />
9-15. Granola, White Pasta, Pasta Salad, English Muffins, Bagels, Croutons, and Pretzels<br />
Why is it good? Granola has some fiber, pasta salad has some vegetables, croutons make our salad crunchy, English muffins are one step up from bagels, and pretzels are a quick low-fat snack.<br />
Why is it bad? One word: carbohydrates. All of these foods are made with corn syrup and/or processed white flour. These foods will spike your blood sugar faster than Bruce Lee could have kicked you in the face. You also will not get much nutrition in the way of protein, fiber, vitamins, or minerals from any of these foods.<br />
Instead choose: 100% whole grain or whole wheat pasta and English muffins for increased fiber and protein. Egg salad because, like it or not, eggs are good for you and are high in protein. Almond slices are high in omega-3 fats and are crunchy like croutons. Substitute healthy nuts for white starches whenever you can and you too can receive a 30% less chance of heart disease. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Even if your reasons for turning toward a vegetarian lifestyle are moral, ethical or religious, it is common to miss the taste of meat especially when you first start your walk as a vegetarian.  The first rule to enforce is not to feel guilty about that.  Just loving meat doesn&#8217;t make you a bad thing.  After all, most of us are raised eating pork, chicken, beef and other meats and if our parents did not have scruples about meat consumption, you have that as part of your upbringing.<br />
The good news is there are lots of substitutes for meat and wonderful recipes you can use so you can eliminate meat from your diet and not feel like you are &#8220;going without&#8221;.  The added benefit is that vegetarian eating is much healthier for your body than a diet where meat is a common ingredient.  Meat carries such a higher incidence of calories and fats that are harder for your body to digest and assimilate that you are doing your body a big favor switching to a meatless lifestyle.<br />
One way to still enjoy some of the aspects of meat but eliminate the actual animal part is to go with meat substitutes in traditional meat meals.  Many restaurants serve veggie burgers where you get the good taste and familiar meal that we all like about hamburgers but you are still staying totally vegetarian.  By shopping at markets and groceries that are supportive of the vegetarian lifestyle, you can often find other traditional meat meals prepared entirely without actual meat to help you get past missing that source of protein.<br />
A staple of vegetarian diet planning is Tofu.  Tofu is made from Soya beans so it is totally natural and a good fit to your vegetarian meal planning.  But it is full of proteins and it is a very flexible ingredient for vegetarian recipes because it reflects the flavors of other foods and herbs and it works well in dishes that use sauces so it can almost be mistaken for a meat dish.<br />
As you set about building your library of vegetarian recipes that are designed to take meat out of the equation, you will often find Tofu as one of the ingredients.  That is because it works so well in lots of different recipes and responds well to grilling, baking or any other preparation method.  Just be sure you take the time to dry your Tofu by putting it on a towel and removing the excess moisture before using it.<br />
If your commitment to vegetarian living also meals the elimination of animal products such as milk and cheese, soy milk has become increasingly popular in the last few years with vegetarians and meat eaters alike because if its health and diet benefits.  Not only is it delicious to drink as a beverage, it can replace milk in recipes just as successfully.<br />
To eliminate animal based cheese from your diet, you might try a product called Tofutti.  They offer many varieties of vegan chesses including cheddar and mozzarella so you can enjoy that flavor with a clear conscience.  You can even find good substitutes for yogurt that is made from tofu or soy milk so you don&#8217;t have to cut popular tastes from your diet entirely.<br />
Tofu is such a great meat substitute and an outstanding nutritional source that you can even use it in traditional egg dishes such as quiches, custard, omelets or any other meals that would emphasize an egg taste.  If you mix pureed tofu with your recipe, you could virtually serve an egg dish even to a meat lover and they would not be able to tell that you had them eating vegetarian.<br />
As you continue to explore vegetarian cooking, there are a number of other meat replacements that do well in various cooking contexts.Tempah comes from a soy bean that has been fermented. Tempah works well once you braise it in a sauce for about an hour.  Once prepared it can be fried in flower and served with a sauce for flavor and be very satisfying.<br />
One of the big projects of making the change to a vegetarian lifestyle is learning ways to substitute healthy alternatives such as we have discussed to take meat and meat products out of your diet.  It will take some learning but that learning can be fun as you reinvent cooking and shopping to fit your new passion for vegetarian eating </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Because the younger generation is often more in touch with world culture than adults, teenagers are in general more attuned to the environmental movement, to issues involving organic farming and with the reasons for becoming a vegetarian.So as more and more teenagers experiment with vegetarianism, the better informed they are about what it really means to live meat free, the better. Then even if they do not continue their lifestyle as a vegetarian, their experience was an educational one and they will be well informed should be chose to continue as a vegetarian in later life.<br />
For parents of teenagers who wish to explore the vegetarian lifestyle, there are more reasons to celebrate than worry.  There are numerous health benefits to developing a vegetarian diet and if their new passion reduces the amount of fast food and junk food they eat, that&#8217;s a good thing.  You will naturally worry if your teenager is getting enough protein if they forgo the eating of meat.  By helping them learn about a well rounded vegan or vegetarian diet, they can derive all of their nutritional needs from natural foods and realize the many benefits of a vegetarian life along the way.<br />
A basic level of knowledge your teen should become educated about early on is the various scales of severity that they can &#8220;go for&#8221; in their move into a vegetarian lifestyle.  Many times a teenager just wants to be able to stake the claim to being a vegetarian.  In that case, simply giving up meat may be sufficient.  It is possible to design a program like that and still enjoy cheese, eggs, fish and diary and the transition to such a diet is not as extreme.<br />
Another word of caution that your teen may take to heart if they seek adult counsel about trying a vegetarian lifestyle is the difficulty of making the transition.  Teenagers are naturally impulsive and extreme so they may just &#8220;go vegetarian&#8221; in one day so they can go to school and lay claim to the title.  But they can still have that reward and plan to ease into a vegetarian discipline and avoid the problems that an extreme change of diet can cause, especially for active teen bodies.  For example, even if the new teen vegetarian just excludes meat from one meal, that still counts as starting their path toward a meat free life.  And if that is not sufficient for your youngster, just cutting meat out of lunch and dinner may be enough.<br />
One of the biggest concerns that you should help your teen be ware of is their vitamin needs in any new diet program.  While a switch to a total vegetable diet will have many positive influences, you should make sure they are getting enough protein and other essential vitamins that they used to get from meat in their diet.  Calcium, B12, zinc and iron are all essential vitamins especially to young people that must be found elsewhere if they decide to stop eating meat.  You can help your teenager enjoy a successful exploration of the vegetarian lifestyle and not face health risks by just being aware of their vitamin needs and making sure they get those vitamins in pill form until their food replacement program gets them way they need.<br />
It&#8217;s a tricky walk to guide a teenager through an interest in a vegetarian life because it is possible that many of the new foods they will have to get used to may not have the right tastes which will tempt them to give up the program.  While as a parent you can have an influence over making their home life vegetarian diet a success, you may need to help them understand that their choices are limited when eating out so they are prepared to make the sacrifice for the sake of staying within their vegetarian guidelines.<br />
Even though teenagers are compulsive and extreme, deep down they do not want to get sick or eat the wrong things.  It&#8217;s a balancing act to allow they to try things like becoming a vegetarian and for us as parents to both do all we can to make it a good experience but also to bring the wisdom they count on their elders for so they can explore the vegetarian lifestyle fully and then walk away form it if they wish and have learned a little bit about vegetarians along the way. </p>

But now, golden microalgae oil is ready to replace medical fish oil for heart and brain health supplement needs.Some types of fish contain relatively high levels of mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], dioxins and other environmental contaminants. In general, older, larger predatory fish contain the highest level of contaminants. Fish can also contain significant levels of methyl mercury, considered one of the more dangerous food contaminants today. PCBs and methyl mercury are believed to have long half-lives in the body and can accumulate in people who consume fish on a frequent basis. Recommendations currently suggest limiting intake of fish to twice per week.Can docosahexaenoic acid omega-3 (DHA)-rich microalgae oil function as a universal fish oil alternative? Based on the effects and benefits of fish oil, it will be important to know how well DHA-rich oil compares in clinical efficacy. Early clinical indications strongly support equal or greater efficacy of microalgae oil compared to fish oil for many treatments, particularly those related to cardio-protection, Alzheimer&#8217;s prevention, and lowering triglycerides.The DHA-rich omega-3 oil produced from microalgae has undergone extensive analysis, showing that the individual components of the extracted oils are all present elsewhere in normal foods consumed by communities. Thus, DHA-rich oil is inherently safe in its fatty acid and sterol components, a fact known since 1997.The oil&#8217;s safety is further supported by historically safe use of this oil and fish oils of similar active ingredient compositions. In addition, microalgae oil safety is guaranteed. The knowledge of human metabolism for each individual component in microalgae oil and a lack of adverse reactions are conclusive. There have been no reports in the literature of allergic or toxic responses to microalgae oil, plus it is approved for infant formula, pregnant and nursing mothers, the elderly and people of all ages.It has been shown that its individual ratios of polyunsaturated fatty acids vary according to food source. For DHA-rich microalgae oil from, the key points to note are how this golden colored microalgae oil matches the human body&#8217;s direct needs. For example, 9 out of 10 of the omega-3s in the human body are a DHA molecule. Notably the Chromista strain has very high levels of DHA (C22 DHA n-3) for help building up the total omega-3s in the body. For naming purposes, C22 refers to the chain length of 22 carbons and the n-3 refers to the omega-3.C22 chains are abundant in the brain. Also noted is the moderate content of docosapentaenoic acid (C22 DPA n-6) in the concentrated nutritional oil. The n-6 refers to omega-6 form. Brain beneficial C22 DPA n-6 is an important building block, present in a wide variety of foods and it does not have the negative properties of other omega-6 forms. The ratio of the C22 DPA n-6 (DPA) to C22 DHA n-3 (DHA) in the Chromista oil is 1:3, the median range of breast milk. Still, DPA and DHA are some of the hardest &#8216;good&#8217; fats to get in the diet without supplementation. Golden microalgae oil provides both of these from one source.C20 chains are abundant in the cardiovascular system. The golden colored oil also has appropriate levels of the &#8216;good&#8217; anti-inflammatory EPA (C20 EPA n-3) to neutralize inflammatory arachidonic acid (C20 ARA n-6) in the system, which may be elevated in dislipidemic individuals and those with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD).Microalgae oil strains have been developed by conventional techniques and no Genetic Modifications were used or needed. The never-ending promise of a weight loss pill that actually works keeps us hoping for eventual success. </p>
<p>At the same time, we&#8217;re continually inundated with news of the most recent diet and how this time it&#8217;s really going to work for us. The South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet, the Atkins Diet, the Low Carb Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, the LA Weight Loss Diet, the Weight Watchers Diet, the Diabetic Diet, the Low Cholesterol Diet, the Prescription Pill Diet, the 3 Day Diet, the Low Fat Diet, the High Protein Diet, the Maker Diet, the Liquid Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, the Fad Diet, the Blood Type Diet, the GI Diet, the Vegetarian Diet, the Vegan Diet, the Detox Diet, the Dash Diet, the Candida Diet, the Gluten Free Diet, the Hollywood Diet, the Negative Calorie Diet, the 1200 Calorie Diet, the Raw Food Diet, the Phentermine Diet, the High Fiber Diet, the Macrobiotic Diet, the Science Diet, the Lemonade Diet, the Scarsdale Diet, the Diverticulitis Diet and the Fat Flush Diet are all examples of diet plans that promise to help us achieve quick weight loss. </p>
<p>Crash diets, weight loss pills and get-thin-quick gimmicks are more prevalent than ever, yet two-thirds of our population is still overweight. Even more startling is the fact that approximately one-third of the people in our country are clinically obese. </p>
<p>With all of these ‘solutions&#8217; available to us, why is it that obesity trends have been alarming enough to prompt the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) to label obesity a national epidemic? Why are we still, as a nation, getting fatter? It&#8217;s certainly not because we&#8217;re not trying. </p>
<p>On the contrary, as a nation we&#8217;re trying harder than ever to lose fat through diet and other weight loss products. As reported by CNN on 1-14-05 &#8220;Americans were expected to spend more than $40 billion in 2004 on weight control pills, gym memberships, diet plans and related foods, estimates Marketdata Enterprises, which studies the weight loss industry.&#8221; Furthermore, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that 80 percent of overweight individuals and almost 87 percent of obese individuals are trying to lose or maintain their weight. </p>
<p>As reported by mygoals.com, 80 percent of Americans made a New Year&#8217;s resolution in 2005. A whopping 26 percent of those resolutions were to improve overall health and fitness, making this the top category for self-improvement. This year was no anomaly, either, according to Amy O&#8217;Connor, deputy editor of Prevention magazine: &#8220;Fifty-nine million people every year resolve to lose weight.&#8221; </p>
<p>So, is there a healthy diet product out there that will actually work? More than likely, the answer is yes. Although there is quite a bit of fraudulent weight loss merchandise on the market today, there is also (somewhere out there) a diet program and weight loss plan that will work for us. The challenge is to find that diet product or diet plan. </p>

A 2005 report by Stanford University documents that the consumer diet industry is now approximately $44 billion and growing. With all this money flowing around, haven&#8217;t we as a country spent enough to fix the obesity problem once and for all? </p>
<p>How can the diet industry keep making more and more money, year after year? After all, $44 billion dollars is a lot of cash! The answer to that question is simple: repeat business. &#8220;98% of today&#8217;s dieters gain the weight back in 5 years. 90% of those individuals end up gaining back more than they lost originally, due to the body&#8217;s panic and efforts to stabilize metabolic rates over the long term&#8221; (Source: Stanford University; stanford.edu). </p>
<p>How do the diet-promoters get all that repeat business? The diet industry is a very unique enterprise in that, when it fails someone, they rarely blame the product. We are hard-pressed to find another business where, if the product doesn&#8217;t work, we blame ourselves. All too often, after giving up on yet another diet program, we find ourselves thinking &#8220;Well, I guess I&#8217;m just not a good enough dieter.&#8221; The tendency is for us to believe that we failed the diet rather than the other way around. </p>
<p>Apply this same logic to the automotive industry, and it soon becomes clear just how faulty this line of reasoning really is. What would happen if we take our car in to the mechanic for repairs and when we returned to pick it up he told us that although we still had to pay the bill, he was unable to fix the problem? Would we willing pay the bill anyway and just say &#8220;Oh well, I guess it&#8217;s just a bad car?&#8221; Of course not! That would be ridiculous! But that&#8217;s exactly what we do when it comes to diets. </p>

<p>What we need to realize is that there is probably a weight loss product or weight loss plan out there that will work for us, but it may not be the same one our friends or co-workers used. To find the best weight loss program for us, we absolutely must realize that one size does not fit all. What worked for our sibling or spouse may not work for us, and what works for us may not work for them. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s probably safe to say that any diet supplement has helped somebody, but it&#8217;s also true that no weight loss drug or plan has helped everybody. Each person has a unique metabolism and very individual nutritional needs, so no single plan will work for everyone. </p>

<p>When seeking a healthy weight loss plan, it&#8217;s important that no food be strictly forbidden. There should not be any (or many) foods that we avoid completely 100% of the time. Why? Because that sets us up for failure! For example, if fudge is one of our favorites and we force ourselves to NOT eat fudge at the holiday party, then for many of us what we&#8217;ve done is set ourselves up for a binge fudge-festival. </p>

<p>A good diet and nutrition program will also help us keep in mind the cost of the foods we eat. We&#8217;re not talking about dollars and cents here, but the FITNESS cost of the food. When picking up that fudge, keep in mind what it will cost to enjoy it. When picking up a plate at the buffet table, let&#8217;s take a moment to pause and think to ourselves: &#8220;The cost of this fudge will be an extra _____ minutes of exercise&#8230;..is that worth it to me?&#8221; Maybe. Maybe not. That&#8217;s for each of us to decide on our own. </p>
<p>The point is that we should be conscious of our food decisions. No foods are forbidden entirely, but we do need to watch our portion sizes and carefully consider the cost of each food. Any good weight management program will incorporate these concepts and also will be approved by your doctor. </p>

<p>Perhaps even more so than with weight loss diets, when searching for weight loss supplements it is critical to rely on the advice of your physician. The careful and supervised use of weight loss diet pills, combined with a sensible diet and regular exercise, can lead to quick weight loss and even easy weight loss (or at least easier than you expected). </p>
<p>Beware, however, the supplement scams on the market. It seems that every time we turn around we are blasted and bombarded with the latest, greatest, new and improved treatment for obesity. The gimmicks just keep coming. The sad truth is that few of these products work. Even fewer will result in real, permanent and lasting fat loss. A very few of the weight loss gimmicks on the market today are not only a consumer rip-off, but they are also quite dangerous&#8230;..even deadly. </p>
<p>As an example, consider the prescription diet drug Meridia. Does it help you lose weight? For some people, the answer is yes. For others, the answer is no. Can it kill you? The answer to this question seems to be a nervous &#8216;maybe&#8217;. &#8220;The consumer group Public Citizen had petitioned the Food and Drug Administration for a ban, citing Meridia users who died of heart problems as young as their 20s and 30s. Even before Meridia was approved for sale, the FDA knew it could increase users&#8217; blood pressure, the group contended.&#8221; (Source: cnn.com) </p>
<p>This week the FDA again refused to ban Meridia, even though whistleblower David Graham (an FDA drug safety officer) testified to Congress last fall that his agency was allowing five unsafe medicines to stay on the market, including Meridia.  </p>
<p>Another example of a dangerous weight loss drug is ephedra. Ephedra was banned in the United States last year, in part due to numerous deaths attributed to this popular weight loss supplement. On April 14 2005, a federal Judge in Utah reversed the short-lived ban on ephedra. Within minutes, spammers were filling our email boxes with messages to BUY BUY BUY before ephedra was banned again. </p>
<p>Yes, ephedra will help some people lose weight. Yes, ephedra is safe for some people in low doses. But there is that little nagging fact that people have DIED and that their deaths have been attributed to ephedra use&#8230;.. </p>
<p>Yet another example of a dangerous diet drug is steroids. For whatever reason, some people have decided that anabolic steroids are the best way to lose weight. Despite the well-documented and serious side-effects of steroid use, the lure of easy weight loss has caused many to throw caution to the wind. Perhaps the most concerning trend is steroid use among our teenage population: &#8220;Teens also listed steroids, growth hormone, amino acids and other potentially unhealthful products among those they&#8217;d tried in the previous year.&#8221; (Source: cnn.com) </p>

But things get more complicated when you go out to eat because you must be prepared to order appropriately at a restaurant so you get good foods but foods that are in line with your vegetarian way of life.<br />
The first order of business that should rank high on your priorities early in your vegetarian career is to find and try all of the vegetarian restaurants in town.  This list will come in handy when enjoying some social time with like minded vegetarians or to eat on the run or from work.  Also these will be the kinds of restaurants where you can learn what kinds of recipes to look for and what you like in a vegetarian order.<br />
But you won&#8217;t take all your meals with other vegetarians.  If you are like most of us, you share your life with friends, loved ones and coworkers who are not part of the vegetarian lifestyle.  So learning to find good vegetarian alternatives in all of the restaurants is one of the skills you will become adept at the longer you remain a vegetarian which is hopefully for life.  One trick is that if you have a vote in the kind of restaurant to choose, go for Chinese or Italian.  Chinese restaurants often have some great meatless offerings already on their menu so you can order vegetarian and not even raise anyone suspicions.<br />
Similarly because you find so many dishes in an Italian restaurant that are pasta only, you can order a veggie pizza or just pasta with a nice sauce or maybe some broccoli and enjoy a fine dinner that is totally in step with your vegetarian rules.  Any restaurant that already has a good selection of meatless dishes that are not set apart as vegetarian are a good choice because you can dine with your non-vegetarian friends and family members and not call attention to the differences between you and them.  And since most restaurants have a good salad menu, that is always a fall back in any restaurant situation.<br />
If your vegetarian regimen is vegan so you must also avoid milk, eggs, cheese or anything cooked in chicken or meat stock, you will have to kick your vigilance up a notch. The good news is that the vegetarian movement has become so large and wide spread that many restaurants want to accommodate their vegetarian customers.<br />
By letting your waiter know of your diet restrictions, he or she can guide you to the items on the menu that fit your requirements.  It is not uncommon to see the manager or chef of the restaurant come to the table to help you make a choice.  Restaurants are in the business of satisfying customers so they want to make sure you are happy with their menu offerings.  And by enlisting the aid of your restaurant staff in a cooperative and friendly way, you send a positive message to your dining companions that you can live a vegetarian lifestyle and still be a happy member of the community in which you live.<br />
Most of us have a short list of restaurants that we frequent often.  But every restaurant you go to wants to be on that short list and make you a valued customer.  So network with your vegetarian friends and do your homework up front to find out which restaurants do well at accommodating the lifestyle of their vegetarian or vegan customers.  Then develop your strategy for handling any situation where you find yourself eating out so you can come out of that experience with a good meal that fits your lifestyle and not miss out on the great social times that we associate with the eating out experience. </p>

The opposite of acids are bases, or alkaloids. These alkaline substances will neutralize acids. In fact, if you mix an acid and a base of equal strength, you will get a new liquid that is close to being neutral. The way of measuring how acidic or alkaline a substance is a scale called pH. It turns out that the body has a set level of pH that it likes to function in. Just as we all have a normal body temperature, we also have a normal pH for our tissues. Different tissues have different pH levels. One of the most important ones is the pH of your blood. The pH of your blood is slightly alkaline. The body will go to great lengths to keep that pH level fixed. It will do this at the expense of other tissues or systems. The goal of any healthy eating regimen is to provide the body with the necessary building blocks in the proper pH such that the pH balance can be maintained easily. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Food allergies put a big hindrance on life in general because, depending on your allergic reaction, eating the wrong food can be deadly.  With all of the preservatives and flavorings in foods now, it can be hard to identify what you may be allergic to because it will not be clearly outlined on the packaging.  Baking also becomes a challenge, because if you have a corn allergy and need something in a recipe for thickening, alternates can be difficult to discern.  Following are some safe foods and baking substitutions for the most common food allergies and alternate diets.<br />
Gluten-Free (Wheat Allergy)<br />
- For baking (leavening), use whipped egg whites or agar-agar.<br />
- Instead of flour derived from wheat, use flour derived from corn or rice.<br />
- Soy products are safe for consumption.<br />
- Most milk and dairy products are safe, except for sour creams, chocolate milk, non-dairy creamers, and yogurt.<br />
Soy Allergy<br />
- Dairy products are safe for consumption.<br />
- Meat can sometimes contain soy as an extender, so as long as soy is not used, most meats are safe.<br />
- Most canned soups and frozen entrees contain soy, so homemade soups and entrees work best.<br />
- There are several condiments that can prove to be troublesome, like Worcestershire sauce, malt vinegar, and soy sauce.  This will give you the opportunity to experiment with other condiments and seasonings to achieve the flavor you desire.<br />
Milk Allergy (NOT the same as lactose intolerance)<br />
- Soy or rice based frozen desserts are a good alternate for ice cream.<br />
- Use milk substitutes for baking.<br />
- Dairy-free margarine can also be used in recipes requiring butter or margarine.<br />
- Avoid foods with batter on them when eating out because the batter usually contains some milk products.<br />
- Make sure you are eating a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables to supply calcium and other nutrients.<br />
Corn Allergy<br />
- Corn syrup is a big ingredient to steer clear of, and unfortunately, it is used in many things as a sweetener.<br />
- All foods and beverages that are not sweetened with corn syrup are safe for consumption.<br />
- In recipes that require a sweetener, fruit juices, honey, and maple syrup provide equal alternates.<br />
- For baking, instead of using corn starch, use rice, potato, or wheat starch instead.<br />
Vegetarian Diet (Ovo-Lacto)<br />
- An ovo-lacto vegetarian will eat milk and egg products.<br />
- For this diet, meatless products can help provide nutrients such as iron and protein.<br />
- Tofu is a good supply of many nutrients.<br />
- Eggs and dairy products will provide B-12 as well as more protein.<br />
- Dark green vegetables will supply calcium for non-ovo-lacto vegetarians.<br />
- Whole grains will also provide iron.<br />
Vegan Diet<br />
- A vegan does not eat and animal products, so this diet excludes meat as well as dairy products.<br />
- Oatmeal, cereal, toast, and fruit juices are good foods for this diet; they will provide a wealth of nutrients for the body.<br />
- Tofu lasagna is a good alternate to lasagna with meat in it.<br />
- Soy ice cream is a good option over milk-based ice cream.<br />
- Rice pudding and banana muffins contain no animal products and are good variations from other foods.<br />
Eating nutritiously with food allergies can be challenging, but definitely not impossible.  With the organic and healthier lifestyles becoming more popular, grocery stores will likely carry an alternative food to the one you are allergic to or choose not to eat.  For people with more serious food allergies, your doctor will be able to provide you with more complete guidelines on living safely with your allergy. </p>

Each individual may respond different to these foods. I am happy to present below some of the &#8220;medications&#8221; that your doctor will rarely prescribe:10 SUPERFOODS 1. Blue-Green Algae, Spirulina and Chlorella: Blue-green micro algae, and its cousins spirulina and chlorella, grow on inland waters throughout the world.This primordial food is visible as greenish scum on still lakes and ponds. The Aztecs ate it as a staple food, dried and spread on tortillas. Africans of the Sahara region also use dried spirulina with grains and vegetables. These algae are high in protein, carotenoids and minerals. Beware, however, of claims that they can provide vitamin B12 in vegetarian diets. Nevertheless, the high mineral and protein content of the various algae make them an excellent super food, a good supplement to the diet and a useful product for the treatment of a variety of health problems. 2. Bee Pollen: Bee pollen has been popularized by famous athletes who take it regularly for strength and endurance. It has been used successfully to treat a variety of ailments including allergies, asthma, menstrual irregularities, constipation, diarrhea, anemia, low energy, cancer, rheumatism, arthritis and toxic conditions. A Russian study of the inhabitants of the province of Georgia, where many live to 100 years and a few to age 150, revealed that many of these centenarians were beekeepers who often ate raw, unprocessed honey with all its &#8220;impurities,&#8221; that is, with the pollen. Bee pollen contains 22 amino acids including the eight essential ones, 27 minerals and the full gamut of vitamins, hormones and fatty acids. Most importantly, bee pollen contains more than 5,000 enzymes and coenzymes. It is the presence of enzymes, many of which have immediate detoxifying effects, that sometimes provokes allergic reactions in those taking bee pollen for the first time. If this happens, start with very small amounts and slowly build up to a tablespoon or so per day. Some brands are more easily tolerated than others. Avoid pollen that has been dried at temperatures higher than 130 degrees. Bee pollen can be taken in powder, capsule or tablet form.or in raw unprocessed honey mixed with cereal or spread on toast. 3. Aloe Vera: Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties. This energy tonic contains protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamins A, B12 and E, essential fatty acids and is naturally rich in: Vitamin C which helps maintain tone of blood vessels and promotes good circulation and is essential to the health of the adrenal gland which supports our body in times of stress. Amino acids which are chains of atoms constructing protein in our body. Enzymes, which are the life-principle in every live, organic atom and molecule of natural raw food, rejuvenate aged tissues and promote healthy skin. Germanium which is a mineral that some health authorities claim therapeutic benefits for: immunodeficiency, pain, cardiac disorders, circulatory disturbances and eye problems. 4. Garlic: Garlic is one of the earth&#8217;s greatest health tonics and does indeed have scientifically-proven medicinal properties. It contains a substance called Allicin, which has anti-bacterial properties that are equivalent to a weak penicillin. It is a natural antibiotic and is useful in treating everything from allergies to tonsillitis. Garlic contains many sulfur compounds which:detoxify the body boost the immune systemlower blood pressureimprove circulation. Garlic has also demonstrated anti-cancer, antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant effects. Garlic: Garlic has antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help scavenge free radicals; particles that can damage cell membranes, interact with genetic material and possibly contribute to the aging process as well as the development of a number of conditions including heart disease and cancer. Free radicals occur naturally in the body but environmental toxins (including ultraviolet light, radiation, cigarette smoking and air pollution) can also increase the number of these damaging particles. Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause over time.Garlic can stimulate the production of glutathione, an amino acid which is known to be a very potent antioxidant and de-toxifier and the smooth muscle relaxant adenosine, also found in the herb, will lower blood pressure. Today people use garlic to help prevent atherosclerosis (plaque build up in the arteries causing blockage and possibly leading to heart attack or stroke), reduce colds, coughs and bronchitis.Garlic has been used to treat:Atherosclerosis: Studies suggest that fresh garlic and garlic supplements may prevent blood clots and destroy plaque. Blood clots and plaque block blood flow and contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. Blockage of blood flow to the heart, brain and legs, can lead to heart attack, stroke, or peripheral vascular disease (PVD). People with PVD experience pain in the legs when they walk and move. If garlic does reduce the build up of plaque then strokes, heart attacks and PVD may be less likely to occur in people who eat garlic or take garlic supplements. High Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure: A number of studies have found that garlic reduces elevated total cholesterol levels and lowers blood pressure more effectively than placebo. However, the extent to which garlic is effective is small. Diabetes: Garlic has been used as a traditional dietary supplement for diabetes in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Preliminary studies in rabbits, rats and limited numbers of people have demonstrated that garlic has some ability to lower blood sugars. More research in this area is needed. (See Notes regarding some concern about using garlic with certain diabetes medications.) Common Cold: A well-designed study of nearly 150 people supports the value of garlic for preventing and treating the common cold. In this study, people received either garlic supplements or placebo for 12 weeks during &#8220;cold season&#8221; (between the months of November and February). Those who received the garlic had significantly fewer colds than those who received placebo. Plus, when faced with a cold, the symptoms lasted a much shorter time in those receiving garlic compared to those receiving placebo. Cancer: Test tube and animal studies suggest that garlic may have some anti-cancer activity. Observational, population-based studies (which follow groups of people over time) suggest that people who have more raw or cooked garlic in their diet are less likely to have certain types of cancer, particularly colon and stomach cancers. Dietary garlic may also offer some protection against the development of breast, prostate and laryngeal (throat) cancers. However, these types of cancer have not been as extensively studied as colon and stomach cancer. Tuberculosis: Numerous test tube studies have demonstrated that garlic extract inhibits the growth of different species of bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the organism responsible for tuberculosis. Very high concentrations of garlic extract were needed to slow down the growth of M. tuberculosis in these studies, so some experts are concerned that these levels may be toxic to people. While further research in people is needed, one animal study found that garlic oil also inhibited M. tuberculosis and reduced lesions in the lungs of these animals. Intestinal Parasites: Laboratory studies suggest that large quantities of fresh, raw garlic may have antiparasitic properties against the roundworm, Ascaris lumbricoides, which is the most common type of intestinal parasite. Garlic for this purpose, however, has not yet been tested in people. Important Note: Garlic can irritate the digestive tracts of very young children and some sources don&#8217;t recommend garlic for breast feeding mothers. In addition, some individuals are allergic to garlic.5. Hempseed oil or Black Currant Oil: These oils contain a fatty acid called gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, which the body produces from omega-6 linoleic acid by the action of special enzymes. In many individuals the production or effectiveness of this enzyme is compromised, especially as they grow older. These oils have been shown to increase liver function and mental acuity. Malnutrition, consumption of hydrogenated oils and diabetes inhibit the conversion of omega-6 linoleic acid to GLA.GLA-rich oils have been used to treat:cancerpremenstrual syndrome breast diseasesclerodermacolitisirritable bowel syndromecystic fibrosis6. Flaxseed oil is an excellent source of omega-3s. Just 1 teaspoon contains about 2.5 grams, equivalent to more than twice the amount most people get through their diets. Flaxseeds also contain omega-6 fatty acids in the form of linoleic acid; omega-6s are the same healthy fats found in vegetable oils.One of the EFAs in flaxseed oil, alpha-linolenic acid, is known as an omega-3 fatty acid. Like the omega-3s found in fish, it appears to reduce the risk of heart disease and numerous other ailments.In addition, flaxseeds are a rich source of lignans, substances that appear to positively affect hormone-related problems. Lignans may also be useful in preventing certain cancers and combating specific bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including those that cause cold sores and shingles.  Specifically, flaxseed oil may help to:Lower cholesterolprotect against heart diseasecontrol high blood pressureCounter inflammation associated with gout, lupus and fibrocystic breasts: Omega-3 fatty acids appear to limit the inflammatory reaction associated with these conditions. In cases of lupus, flaxseed oil not only reduces inflammation in the joints, skin and kidneys, but also lowers cholesterol levels that may be elevated by the disease. Taking flaxseed oil for gout may lessen the often sudden and severe joint pain or swelling that is a symptom of this condition. In addition, the ability of omega-3 fatty acids to boost the absorption of iodine&#8211;a mineral often found in low levels in women suffering from fibrocystic breasts&#8211;makes flaxseed oil potentially valuable for treating this often painful condition. Control constipation, haemorrhoids, diverticular disorders and gallstones: Because they are high in dietary fibre, ground flaxseeds can help ease the passage of stools and thus relieve constipation, haemorrhoids and diverticular disease. In those with diverticular disease, flaxseeds may also keep intestinal pouches free of waste and thus keep potential infection at bay. Taken for inflammatory bowel disease, flaxseed oil can help to calm inflammation and repair any intestinal tract damage. In addition, the oil may prevent painful gallstones from developing and even dissolve existing stones. Treat acne, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn and rosacea: The essential fatty acids in flaxseed oil are largely responsible for its skin-healing powers. Red, itchy patches of eczema, psoriasis and rosacea often respond to the EFA&#8217;s anti-inflammatory actions and overall skin-soothing properties. Sunburned skin may heal faster when treated with the oil as well. In cases of acne, the EFAs encourage thinning of the oily sebum that clogs pores. Promote healthy hair and nails: The abundant omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseed oil have been shown to contribute to healthy hair growth (in fact, low levels of these acids may cause dry and lackluster locks). Hair problems exacerbated by psoriasis or eczema of the scalp may respond to the skin-revitalizing and anti-inflammatory actions of flaxseed oil as well. Similarly, the oil&#8217;s EFAs work to nourish dry or brittle nails, stopping them from cracking or splitting. Minimise nerve damage that causes numbness and tingling as well as other disorders: The EFAs in flaxseed oil assist in the transmission of nerve impulses, making the oil potentially valuable in treating conditions of numbness and tingling. The oil&#8217;s nerve-nourishing actions may also help in the treatment of Parkinson&#8217;s disease, a degenerative disorder of the nervous system, and protect against the nerve damage associated with diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Reduce cancer risk and guard against the effects of ageing: The lignans in flaxseed oil appear to play a role in protecting against breast, colon, prostate, and perhaps skin cancer. Although further studies are needed, research undertaken at the University of Toronto indicates that women with breast cancer, regardless of the degree of cancer invasiveness, may benefit from treatment with flaxseed oil. Interestingly, the oil&#8217;s lignans may protect against various effects of ageing as well. Treat menopausal symptoms, menstrual cramps, female infertility and endometriosis: Because the hormone-balancing lignans and plant estrogens (phytoestrogens) in flaxseed oil help stabilise a woman&#8217;s estrogen-progesterone ratio, they can have beneficial effects on the menstrual cycle, and relieve the hot flashes of perimenopause and menopause. Flaxseed oil may also improve uterine function and thus treat fertility problems. In addition, the essential fatty acids in flaxseed oil have been shown to block production of prostaglandins, hormonelike substances that, when released in excess amounts during menstruation, can cause the heavy bleeding associated with endometriosis. Fight prostate problems, male infertility and impotence: The EFAs in flaxseed oil may help to prevent swelling and inflammation of the prostate, the small gland located below the bladder in males that tends to enlarge with age. Symptoms of such enlargement, such as urgency to urinate, may lessen as a result. The EFAs also play a role in keeping sperm healthy, which may be of value in treating male infertility, and they can improve blood flow to the penis, a boon for those suffering from impotence. Important Notes: Flaxseed oil is also called linseed oil. The industrial types of linseed oil found in hardware stores are not for internal consumption, however. They may contain poisonous additives. Do not take if pregnant or breast-feeding. Due to lack of information it is advisable to avoid giving flaxseed oil to children under the age of 12. Women with hormone-dependent conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or cancers of the breast, ovaries, or uterus and men with prostate cancer should avoid taking flaxseed products without prior consultation with a doctor. Flaxseed can block the esophagus or parts of the intestinal tract. Therefore individuals who have had esophageal or intestinal blockages should not use flaxseed. Side effects associated with taking flaxseed are gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea, gas, nausea, and stomach pain. Allergic reactions have been reported by individuals who took flaxseed or flaxseed oil. In case studies, flaxseed oil has been reported to increase the time blood needs to clot. When it is taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs, the effect of the drug may be increased, resulting in uncontrolled bleeding. Antiplatelets include Plavix and Ticlid. Anticoagulants include aspirin, heparin and warfarin. Avoid taking with Danshen, Devil&#8217;s Claw, Garlic, Ginger, Ginkgo, Ginseng, Horse Chestnut, Papain, Red Clover or Saw Palmetto. If you take flaxseed, do not take other drugs within 2 hours.Properties: Analgesic, anti-estrogenic, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic, demulcent, emollient, expectorant, laxative, nervine, pectoral, purgative, resolvent. Flaxseed is beneficial for: Acne, aging, angina, arthritis and joint inflammation, back pain, bacteria, fungi, and viruses, cancer prevention, cataracts, chronic pain, cold sores, constipation, Crohn&#8217;s disease, diverticular disorders, eczema, endometriosis, fatigue, gallstones, gout, hair problems, heart disease prevention, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and clogged arteries, impotence, infertility (male &amp; female), kidney stones, lupus, menopause, multiple sclerosis, nail problems, osteoporosis, parkinson&#8217;s disease, premenopause, prostate problems, psoriasis, rosacea, shingles, skin health, stroke, sunburn.7. Maca has traditionally been a staple superfood-food-herb in the harsh cold climates of the high Andes in Peru for thousands of years. Maca grows at an elevation of 11,000-14,000 feet making it likely the highest altitude food-herb crop in the world. The character and properties of maca have been developed by the extreme conditions under which it grows. This makes Maca an excellent food-herb choice for individuals living in cold climates and/or at high altitudes and/or with extreme lifestyles.Maca is a member of the cruciferous family of plants. It is a distant relative of the common radish. The maca plant produces leaves that grow close to the ground and the plant produces a small, off-white flower typical to the cruciferous family. The main part of interest for this plant, however, is the radish-like tuberous root. Dried maca powder contains 60% carbohydrates, 9% fiber, and slightly more than 10% protein. It has a higher lipid (fat) content than other root crops (2.2%), of which linoleic acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid are the primary fatty acids, respectively.
