Fat is lost throughout the body in a pattern dependent upon genetics, sex, and age. Your total body fat must be reduced in order to lose fat in any particular area, such as your stomach.
Although fat is lost or gained throughout the body it seems the first area to get fat, or the last area to become lean, is the midsection. Sit-ups and crunches will just exercise the muscles BEHIND the fat, making your stomach look bigger and just as flabby as before.
But the best way to lose fat is with intense cardio (like running) combined with a good diet.
